Why Are We Not Getting Up In Arms Over THIS?! (Spoilers)

Swords? Why does Sulu have a sword?

I don't want to see Swords. Where are all the plants and fauna? Sulu likes plants! John Cho better be doing some gardening in this movie or I may very well walk out of the the movie theatre.

Does Abrams know nothing about cannon?

Scroo swords. Plants are teh best!!!!11!

I really have no problem seeing Sulu with a katana. He's supposed to be of mixed Asian descent, though, so I hope they emphasize more than just his Japanese heritage.

Since George Takei isn't up in arms over this, are you going to tell him he's wrong about the Sulu character?

Maybe, just possibly, George Takei has better things to do than to look for blurry photographs of what may or may not be the Star Trek set.

...gee, there's no much talk about Scotty getting a midget assistant, and nobody's remembering that's what he got in "Plato's Stepchildren".

Poor Alexander didn't last to the next episode- I bet Scotty ate him.

I have decided to consider this thread null and void.

If Worf can pull out his Mek'leth in First Contact then, gosh darnit, Sulu can have his freakin' sword.

That's not a sword.

That's his giant Asian penis in a blue condom.

Picard did have a knife fight with Shinzon....

Not that anyone wants to remember it.
Damn! I had blocked that horrible fight blocked out; now it's coming back to me in horrible vivid detail.

Will you see the whole movie (just to be sure) before walking out, or is there a time-limit on how soon gardening must happen?

Maybe with some FX we'll see it's really a light sabre.

It's funny how on the retro weapon scale Trek has a penchant for going from phasers all the way back to swords, skipping guns altogether.
From some reason they must believe a sword seems less anachronistic than a semi-automatic pistol or an uzi (which is what I'd want to be packing when phasers fail me).

By the way, maybe we'll see a good old fashioned Trek-style fist fight in this movie, too.

And, apparently, it is detachable... too.

According to Yelchin, at the end of the film everyone is in "the gold and the blue and the red" uniforms...so they're at least being somewhat consistent with the Trek TV shows, both TOS and the modern ones.

The question, of course, would be who's in what color and what the actual designs of the outfits are like. What about the extras in the olive and teal outfits whose photos showed up on www.jfxonline.com the first day of shooting? Is teal=blue and olive=gold?

Ideally, I'd like to see some gardening before the end of Act I. I'd certainly like to see some reference to gardening in the opening scenes.

Act II needs to show some of the obstacles that Sulu faces to the gardening, and at the end of the Act II it should look like all hope is lost, with a very real possibility that gardening may not happen. Then when we finally see the gardening in Act III, it is somewhat of a suprise to the audience.

Ideally.

These are the adventures of Hikaru Sulu, gardner. His lifelong mission:

To explore strange new greenhouses,
To seek out new plants and new fertilizer soil,
To boldly garden where no one has gardened before!
