Why Are We Not Getting Up In Arms Over THIS?! (Spoilers)

Rather than a space suit, what if it's a pilot's suit? Sulu was test piloting a vessel, and something goes wrong (cliche, I know). He crash lands on some planet where they don't have or don't use guns or phasers. Because he was only supposed to be test flying his little ship and bringing it straight home, Sulu didn't have a phaser. He is then forced to protect himself with the native's weaponery until someone comes to his rescue.

It IS kinda surprising that through 6 movies, we never saw anyone outside a spaceship in a spacesuit. I can't recall many other scifi movies set in space where that DOESN'T happen.

You must have missed both Spock and Kirk's EVA suits when they went into the V'Ger cloud in ST:TMP.

Or you were asleep, which is probably more reasonable! :D

Uh, he was referring to the six Star Wars movies...

Oh, then did he forget the Mynock attack scene in Empire Strikes Back?

That was EVA with atmospheric gear.

God, I'm such a geek.

Next thing you know Scotty will get a midget sidekick

I can see it now:

"Scotty's sidekick, we need warp speed in 5 minutes or we're all dead!!!"

"Whatchoo talkin' bout, Jimmeh?"

Are we suppose to get up in arms over everything? There is no context to the picture at all so why be premature over something like this?
Which is what makes it perfect: Everything's fair game! Make up any shit you want!

Behold - Sulu with a fencing sword:

Now, it's ridiculous of course. But, we must remember he was influenced by an alien entity... or something, so it's forgivable. Additionally, George Takei looked pretty impressive topless ( which - on the record - I mean in a purely non-sexual context).

But this?

The latest incarnation of Sulu appears to be brandishing a katana. Now forgive me, but that doesn't strike me as standard issue for Starfleet officers.

Does Abram's vision have a Batman-style utility belt in mind? Polaron radiation interfering with your phaser? No prob! Unsheath your fold-out katana blade and start hacking away.

Lest we forget he's a bigger fan of Star Wars than Star Trek.

Abrams and co may have more up their sleeve than we've anticipated.

*poses thoughfully*

The dude's Japanese. Maybe this version of Sulu practiced with the Katana prior to StarFleet Academy. *shrugs*

The first Sulu seemed to know his way around with a sword, so maybe it's a hobby?

"We" and "us" are always the funniest parts, because it falls in line perfectly with those that think their own personal, narrow, self-important vision of Trek is what everyone else needs to adhere to.

This is nothing. I'm pretty sure its canon that Sulu had a thing for swords and weapon-based martial arts. So he's got a freaking katana.

I have decided to consider this thread null and void.

If Worf can pull out his Mek'leth in First Contact then, gosh darnit, Sulu can have his freakin' sword.

^ I'll go one step further, and am now officially boycotting any Shatner threads. This is the last time I will post in one. If others join me, maybe they will all just float to page 2 in a quick death.

ATTICA! ATTICA!

Sulu wasn't a martial arts enthusiast from what I saw. One episode, Shore Leave I believe, had him mention a collection of antique firearms.

The whole point of him fencing in The Naked Time (Edited from: Now), was to be non stereotypical. George Takei mentions this in several interviews. The original script had him go nuts with a samurai sword and he got it changed. They even made a joke about his ethnicity in that excellent Futurama episode, where he says something along the lines of "Have I ever led you to believe I've studied karate?"

On another note, I'm surprised an argument hasn't broken out about Simon Pegg's Scotty allegedly getting a "midget sidekick". Maybe they'll be using a camera trick to reduce Nick Frost.

^ Time. TIME. Naked TIME.

edit: oh crap, I broke my rule already. This time I meant it! For realz!

Who's to say Sulu didn't also posess a katanna? Maybe he's got a whole variety of swords we never knew about. He seems to be the enthusiast.
The guy is Japaneese , I think he might would bring the Katana with him much like Scotty's kilt it's probably something to do with his heritage. his suit looks like some sort of flight suit

And why not a katana? The curved-edge sword was widely accepted as the most effective form of blade as a killing weapon, moreso than the straight-edge claymore or pigsticking foil. It's no surprise that the US cavalry sabre, katana, and chinese broadswords were so popular towards the end of the sword's dominance as a weapon before being replaced by firearms.

Dunno about Sulu carrying one along with him for no reason, but we've seen bladed weapons in Trek often enough. Duras tried killing Worf with a katana-esque sword, and it's not like THAT guy would want to use a human weapon.

I can appreciate Takei's comments, but I personally equate a Katana with Japanese culture, not necessarily with a negative stereotype.

I'm of Greek heritage. The film My Big Fat Greek Wedding was FULL of Greek-American stereotypes, but none of them were negative ones. I never once saw that film as condenscending -- in fact I loved that film because it took me back to fond memories growing up amidst a Greek-American community.

I don't see how Sulu with a sword that is part of his heritage would be automatically condescending.

Maybe in the 1960s, people (even Takei) wanted to 'blend in' more with white-bread American culture, but here in the 21st century it is okay -- and even encouraged -- to show diversity through the differences in our cultures.

Maybe Scotty's "side kick" is one from the same race as those little people in Journey to Babel (Ithenites??). I always found it a bit odd that even though Tellarites, Andorians, and the Ithenites were major members of the Federation, we never saw them again in TOS.

Maybe Abrams plans on his "Federation Starfleet" be a more inclusive one that includes many different races; Or possibly this little person is an Ithenite who was Scotty's friend and associate before Scotty joined Starfleet.
