Why Are We Not Getting Up In Arms Over THIS?! (Spoilers)

StarMan

Vice Admiral
Admiral
Behold - Sulu with a fencing sword:

Now, it's ridiculous of course. But, we must remember he was influenced by an alien entity... or something, so it's forgivable. Additionally, George Takei looked pretty impressive topless ( which - on the record - I mean in a purely non-sexual context).

But this?

The latest incarnation of Sulu appears to be brandishing a katana. Now forgive me, but that doesn't strike me as standard issue for Starfleet officers.

Does Abram's vision have a Batman-style utility belt in mind? Polaron radiation interfering with your phaser? No prob! Unsheath your fold-out katana blade and start hacking away.

Lest we forget he's a bigger fan of Star Wars than Star Trek.

Abrams and co may have more up their sleeve than we've anticipated.

*poses thoughfully*

There can be only one.

Seriously, for me, this is just another one of those hopelessly self-referential things I'd rather not see. It's as if they have a checklist that they're going through. It makes me think more of Nemesis.

Sulu with a sword? Check
Kobayashi Maru? Check
Kirk's Brother? Check
Sarek? Check
Amanda? Check
Red Shirt Number 3 from Episode 5, Season 2? Check

I'm getting profound amusement about the fact fans are getting up in arms about inside references, usually that's supposed to be part of the fun of being a fan being able to pick up on the inside jokes and call backs to previous things. Me I enjoy it myself as long as it helps whatever the story is flow.

Moreover lacking the context of what and where and why? Its hard to judge if its "hopelessly self referential" or in some way helps tell the story in an interesting manner.

I'm more troubled by the fact that John Cho, whom I like, doesn't look at all like George Takei. At least with the principals there was some attempt beyond race to match the incoming actors to the characters.

Aside from Zachary Quinto, none of the actors really resemble those that played the roles before them, and that's most likely due to the presence of Nimoy in the film and the need to have an actor plausibly portray a younger version of Spock.

Holy crap! You mean Sulu had more sword fighting experience than previously known? What a disaster!

I don't know, I've moved my concern over this movie back five months. Catch me about July.

One thing I can say: I sure hope Chekov is sporting a Davy Jones haircut. That'd be soooooo mod.

IIRC, there weren't a lot of swords lying around in studio prop rooms "back in the day," aside from fencing foils.

Looks more like the iconic Trek duel type thing, you can just about see the end of another weapon....besides why is no one more interested in what hes wearing, new style space suit?

Who's to say Sulu didn't also posess a katanna? Maybe he's got a whole variety of swords we never knew about. He seems to be the enthusiast.

I'm more interested to find out why he has a sword while wearing a spacesuit. Is it a Zero-G sword fight?!
