Why are Treks fans so……

Threading the needle between "Hey, this isn't like the old stuff!" and "Hey, this is just the same old stuff!" is always going to be tricky -- and you're never going to strike just the right balance for everyone.

And that applies to any long-running property, not just STAR TREK.

You could devise some new fiction from the ground up but it would take some time for people to get used to it.

Nobody is patient enough for that anymore even though that is how we got Star Wars and the Hobbit, and Lord of the Rings and Narnia, and on and on. At some point in time it requires taking a risk that people are not going to like it.

But, the sheer amount of in the moment thinking and efforts to recapture the glory days is ultimately creating a very unsatisfying loop.

Fans of anything are a diverse bunch all with their individual likes and dislikes, so naturally there will be debate sometimes heated about various aspects of what ever they are fans of. Some people want more of the same kind of like a comfort food whilst others will want a greater variety. Both views are equally valid and perhaps the issue is that we can often get defensive when others criticise what we like.

It does take on a distinctly personal edge that's for sure.

The OP's question could be asked about just about any fandom, really.

Kor

I agree, but I think it stands out more in Star Trek fandom, where the show is (aside from action/adventure in space) essentially built on the concepts of thoughtfulness, tolerance and diversity. I think it makes us look a little more hypocritical (fair or unfair) than the standard MCU or SW fan who happens to be an ass.

I do notice this, especially with the categorization of various Treks.
