Why are there no overweight or obese people in Star Trek?

I guess people in the 24th practice some kind of Vulcan mind meld, so they can control themselves better. This way they won't run to the nearest McDonald's, if they are still around.
Over 500 sextillion served!

There's no junk food in the 24th-Century. After Taco Bell won the Fast Food Wars* a few centuries earlier, it was pretty much all over...
It was the Franchise Wars, actually.

Hmmm.... It is also true in the Trek Universe that people in the future seem to lose all sense of humor.
That only started with Trek TNG (aka Trek PC).

I would attribute it to the quality of food in the replicators, the lack of unhealthy foods that are popular today.....somehow, more emphasis on active lifestyles. Even if there are civilian holodecks, people could participate in them -- playing sports, or exercising while during a holonovel.

Good point IMO! I guess they get all spiritual about everything, so they wouldn't necessarily need stuff like this. I like to know how they learn to control themselves that well. Why didn't anybody think of that sooner?

You just don't see that many obese people in Starfleet
If you've seen as many fan films as I, you wouldn't say that.

Still this is an important matter, I'll knock back a six pack of dark German beer with my deep-fried twinkles and dwell on the matter.

Why didn't anybody think of it in the "beginning"? Hmmmm..... Such self-control...that would come in handy in time of Crisis IMO.

Salt isn't good for you? Without it, you'd die.

Agreed that in the 23rdth Century, they've gotten obesity and being overweight under control. There would still be some folks plagued with a genetic issue making it extremely difficult to combat, but they would be very few.

As for the remarks about today, it's very simple: People have lost their knowledge about what food is and how to eat it. Our society removed the ancient ways of managing food from our culture, causing a gradual loss of knowledge. And then, the insipid commercial food industry stepped in to make food very affordable, seductively addictive (loaded with sugar and salt), and at a low overhead cost, all at the cost of it being nutritionless. This combination has caused so many fat people in our society today. Those enormous conglomerate food businesses have gotten filthy rich at the expense of the public health. It's a really sick, maddening problem that further shows how human beings are still so arrogantly exploitive of the ignorant or gullible. And it's not just with food... the economic mess today is systemic of a subtle moral collapse. We've not seen the worst of it yet... it's a hurdle akin to the adolescence of technology that we must surmount in order to see ourselves prospering in the centuries ahead. As of today, I'm not feeling so optimistic about us making it.

The whole point of fast food is cheap and great tasting meals. Isn't that why people go to these places? They wouldn't be able to make that much profit if they didn't sell food that taste great. If they want to be serious about eating healthy and staying healthy, they would have stay home and cook the food themselves. If the fast food chains start making healthy food, even these people that are complaining would go there to eat. There is nothing wrong with making money and if someone wants to further themselves by making even more money, I don't see anything wrong with that. At least they and their family don't have to beg anyone for money. I think anyone would have done the same if they had to opportunity to make a lot of money. I think blaming the fast food and other people for the choices that you make is fundamentally flawed. It's about taking responsibility for your own action and righteousness. People need to be aware that the decision they make (not other people) will ultimately affect them and also others. Self-pity is not very productive...waiting for someone to help you...instead of taking the matter into your hands and take control of your life. People can make their life into whatever they want it to be. Otherwise their won't be so many billionaires in this country alone. These people have a lot of perseverance and determination. I think it helps also not to take everything way too seriously... so this way you feel better about yourself, instead of being paranoid about a bunch of stupid crap, making it easier to do whatever it is you want to do...a goal you want to reach in your life. People who really feel bad about themselves (self-pity) tend to have psychological problems and so it makes it harder to respect others and live a fulling life. Life is all about people you love...that's what it basically boils down to. People get silly and do stupid stuff all the time. You shouldn't take it too seriously...unless someone gets hurt...and only be serious when you need to. Being uptight is like feeling sorry for yourself...overtime you feel ashamed of who you are. You shouldn't really hate yourself. That's when people do stupid stuff that can really hurt other people.

^ TL, DR.

We won't need to wait until Kirk or Picard's time for therapeutic cures for obesity. More like a decade or two or a generation, tops.

Why are there no overweight or obese people in Star Trek?

For the same reason why there are no/very, very few gays.

:ducks:

So, there's an alternate relaity where all the guys are leather-wearing fatasses?

Dude, there's an alternate reality for everything. So yes. There are probably hundreds of those alternate realities. At least, according to quantum realities. Or are there an infinite number, as there are infinite possibilities? Gah, another discussion for another day. :wtf:

People eating too much and not getting enough exercise is why there are so many fat people today. Take some personal responsibility and stop blaming every social ill on the big evil corporations.

I thought about this and my idea was also that the food replicators could constitute food with the correct amount of calories and also the right amount of fat, carbohydrates and protein for you for that day.
And yeah, I guess we can assume they need to try to stay in shape through exercise as well, being Starfleet officers.
