Why are there no Firefly novels?

Is it even a fact that Whedon holds the Book Rights to Firefly? I've read numerous posts blaming JMS for a lack of new Babylon 5 Books, but, he doesn't own the rights to anything but, a Motion Picture, everything else is owned by WB.

That's a different story. By contract, JMS is involved in any new Babylon 5 production. As in, visual stuff (tv, animation, etc).

Publishers can feel free to license the rights to do whatever they want from Warner Bros. They would have to get JMS's involvement separately ... Mongoose tried that. Yes, they had the rights to do new B5 fiction books. They didn't have to deal with JMS or anyone on staff, since they had the license from WB. It was the fan backlash (and, based on the reviews I have seen from those who have read the stuff) that made them decide not to move forward with publishing those new books.

They can. It doesn't necessarily mean they should.

As for Joss ... It's known that he had the proposals sitting on his desk for a period of several months to a year. That was mentioned by KRAD at the time, and confirmed by others in this thread. Does that mean HE has the rights, by contract? We don't know. We do know that he made the choice not to go forward with the novels.

It could mean that by contract, he has approval over anything that's published in that universe. Or, it could mean that the publisher/studio did not want to do something without his involvement. We don't know. And, likely, won't. Because frankly, it's none of our business what's in his contract.

Wheadon has said that letters from the fans had a very strong influence in getting the studio to green light Serenity. I wonder if the Firefly fan groups have a similar petition for him to reconsider making novels?

I'd love some novels set prior to the pilot episode of Firefly. I feel like Mal, Jayne, Zoe, Wash, Kaylee & Inara had some interesting adventures before they ran into Book, Simon and River.

There's nothing wrong with speculating. What's wrong is assuming -- asserting or believing speculation as though it were proven fact.

This site wouldn't exist if people weren't free to assert that their opinions or wild guesses are 100% fact!

Which is why some of us can't resist trying to provide a reality check now and then!

A Sissyphean task, I know . . . like trying to stop people from misspelling "canon" or "Khan." :)

If he was still alive I would love to have seen Isaac Assimov write a firefly novel.

Hmmmm... I'm not sure how well that would turn out. Asimov was great at setting up high concept scifi ideas, and less so at creating compelling characters and good dialogue.

^Oh, yeah. Asimov's skill set (and there's only one s in his name, please!) was the complete opposite of what Firefly/Serenity needs.

Why are there no Firefly novels? I know there are graphic novels, but I don't care for graphic novels. Is it because the industry doesn't believe there is a market or is it some kind of licensing issue?

why don't you write one?
