Look at most any old Humphrey Bogart movie for instance. Bogie may be playing a sarcastic smart-ass who does not suffer fools lightly and gives cops and other authority figures a hard time, routinely mouthing off to the rich and powerful, but, typically, he treats those beneath him with respect: cabbies, coat-check girls, shoeshine boys, etc.
Except, of course, in THE CAINE MUTINY, where he plays a mentally disturbed commander just like the ones in Starfleet.
