Who's the Shooter?

theory-the shooters are from the freighter-I think the writers tipped their hand with her final comment about Daddy-the Others know who she is, she wouldn't have to say that-so they goofed a little and gave away that it was a-holes from the freighter.

Yeah, we know that Alex wouldn't need to say that, but Alex doesn't know that. It could be the Others but Alex may think that it is the people from the freighter, so she starts shouting about who she is even though it's not necessary.

It wouldn't have made much sense for them to show the mercs on the boat target practicing for no good reason if it WASN'T them that did the shooting later on. Seems a pretty obvious connection...

Misdirection, maybe. We'll see.

I see equal evidence for either theory right now. I can't find a link for it now, but I saw an interview earlier today where the guy who plays Karl said that the scene originally ended with men in camouflage emerging from the jungle after Alex yells, indicating that it was men from the boat. But that part of the scene was cut, so perhaps they chose to leave it ambiguous and decide the answer later on.

Either way, 10 bucks that this is one of those cliffhangers where we don't actually see what happened to Alex for a few episodes, ala Locke finding his Dad in the Other's storage room.

Remember in Lethal Weapon where Riggs and Murtaugh jump at the sound of a nail gun, mistaking it for an actual gunshot? And later on when Riggs is fighting one of the bad guys and uses the nail gun on him? Would it have been better for you if that nail gun had no set up and came out of the blue?

I can't argue with that one. :bolian:

In fact, I hope the next episode turns out to be a Claire flashback. She's been holding the baby for too long now. ;)

Intriguingly I remember seeing the entry wound on Karl's chest, and a big exit wound on his back. :( Unless he got a "Henry"-style lung puncture, he's probably gone.

I didn't see any on Danielle, though. :)
She was shot on the right side of her chest and a bit under her right (I think right) breast. I think it just missed her heart and she'll make it.

Bulletproof rucksack strap, we hope. :bolian:

"I hates dem Others."

I think that it IS the shooters from the freighter and that they knew exactly who Alex was. Their orders were to get Ben and they would have no problem using his daughter as a hostage. Carl and Danielle were in the way.

Problems with this:
(1) The shooter(s) weren't very good shots. Alex looked at bushes moving and they weren't very far away.
(2) The gang from the freighter were using machine guns without silencers for skeet shooting. Why practice with one type of weapon, then use another? Unless, of course, they just didn't show us the rest of the target practice.
(3) It isn't the first time that the Others cut down one of their own.

Bottom line: hell, I don't know. I'll wait for a month like everyone else.

Thing is, it's probably the same weapon. MP5s are easily silenced, but if I'm not mistaken the silencers can screw with your aim a little. So given they were just shooting skeet on the freighter with no need for stealth, no need for silencers.

From an interview with Blake Bashoff aka Carl:

I wish I knew more than what we all saw last night, but it's sort of all shrouded in secrecy. Watching the episode last night, I did notice that [something that we shot wasn't shown]. On the day we filmed it, the people who were shooting at us, there was actually a great shot of the snipers emerging through the jungle in these incredible, elaborate, jungle camouflage uniforms. And I don't know if you got a sense of that last night or not—I think you just saw movement in the trees.

I wonder why they cut it. Did they want to leave us with the impression that it could've either been the Freighties or the Ohers who were the shooters instead of being clear cut? Cut for time? ?!?

They'll probably show that when the show comes back. They want us to theorize and discuss and draw those around us into our own personal hell trying to figure this stuff out.
