Who's Going to Be Writing ST III?

Commishsleer

Now that according to boborci on Trekmovie.Com. that he is only producing STIII, are we to believe that Robert Orci won't be involved in the writing of STIII?
Or is this someone pretending to be Robert Orci to get their Christmas jollies?

I know some other friends of Robert Orci were also supposed to be involved in the writing. But I thought these guys didn't have much if any movie experience. And would they stay if Robert Orci wasn't involved?

According to Variety, it's going to be Bob Orci, J.D. Payne, and Patrick McKay.
The article is from a few weeks ago, but it should still be relevant.

Yep, Orci is still the writer. Let's hope the storyline isn't changed too much, I can't wait to see Shatner and Nimoy on screen together again. I hope that idea's atoms doesn't get scattered.

Actually, if there's anything I'd like see as a result of a new script/story, it's dropping the old guard cameos. Obviously if they're in it I'll still watch it (I've seen every minute of Trek broadcast on TV or screened at the cinema), but I'd rather the next movie truly stand on its own.

I really don't see that changing writers, directors etc. will make a huge difference for STIII. Without wanting to be overly cynical, the studio made money on the last two. Their brief will be 'more of the same', don't take risks and don't shake things up.

They will have hired creative staff who they know will be able to deliver what was requested of them...

Agreed.

I like to cheer for the Shat just because he's the Shat. But in the end, the film is probably better off without him.

And all those ideas about trying to shoehorn as many old cast members as possible just for the sake of it are pretty ridiculous.

They've got a draft script written by McKay, Payne and Orci which doubtless will be reworked to Lin's direction. The WGA will probably determine final credits.

At the risk of sound too optimistic (perhaps a balancing act, maybe ;)) changing directors can make a huge difference in a film production, because a director can set the tone and pacing of a project that will make it or break it.

Reading about Lin, he obviously knows how to produce a product in a timely fashion, knows his way around Hollywood, and has something to work with, and not build from the ground up.

He might follow the studio's directives, but I think he also will provide some energy to the project that might spark it in the right direction.

A few weeks and a year...

I'm kinda wondering what Orci's creative differences were, or who they were with.

Wow, you're right! Either I still think we're in 2013, or I'm just too tired to pay full attention anymore. In the interests of saving my reputation, we'll say I thought we were in the year 2013. :shifty:

I would like to know the reasons behind Orci's leaving the project, if for no other reason than to satisfy my curiosity.

Even if Orci's comments on Trekmovie are accurate, and he's stepped back to simply a producer role, there's nothing stopping him from technically assisting with or at least overseeing/approving the script, right?

So either way he'll still be very involved, I'd think.

Y'gotta love the arrogance of Bob. "...And it, again, is the reason why I make movies and you don’t." That's true. He gets paid a lot of money to work on movies and TV. And I get paid jack to do whatever crummy job it is I do. But neither of us makes well-written movies, so we have that in common at least.

Not to say that having someone else write guarantees a better product, but at least there is hope. Just give us a story that is internally consistant and we're half-way there. :)

Isn't Paramount supposedly unhappy with the script?
Isn't that a part of the reason that Orci is no longer the director? It obviously has nothing to do with Orci's directing as he hasn't done any yet.

For all the criticisms of the writing of STID its certainly no worse than the writing in blockbusters such as the Avengers, Thor, Iron Man, Fast and Furious. Probably a lot better.

I would imagine Paramount rejected Orci, Payne and McKay's script - after all, Orci made it crystal clear beforehand that his getting the Director gig was dependant on how they received it.

Whether they're starting from scratch, or doing a rewrite, is anyone's guess.

All I know is if there isn't at least one staff meeting, I'm going to be pissed.
Also, they need to let me write for the movie.

Orci said he's only producing so yeah, what the heck is even happening to a movie that is supposed to start filming in february and apparently has no script?
I hope that the actors are sure at least, I wouldn't want to be in the shoes of their agents now.
New writers and director might change a lot of things, I don't know what they will change. It depends on whatever they liked the previous movies and the choices made by the writers too. I don't want them to ignore what was done before, especially things new to the reboot.

It will certainly be interesting to see what visual and characterisation changes Lin makes. Hopefully, nothing as glaring as the change to Kirk between the end of STV, where he's merrily drinking with Klingons, to the start of VI, where he'd like to see them all die.

Visually, the Enterprise was rebuilt at the end of ID, so whatever she looks like we can just squint, cough loudly and pretend that's what the rebuild always looked like.
