hi again.
im currently on season 3 of TNG but it still hasnt explained where whoopi goldberg came from.she just appeared in season 2.no explaination etc.
will all be revealed or did i miss an episode?
any info greatly appreaciated as it seems she has been in it a while now without even explaining how she ended up on the enterprise

In 'The Child,' the first episode of season 2, Guinan is referred to as the new bartender. She just sort of comes aboard, but that's her first episode, as well as Diane Muldaur as Pulaski.

They never explain where she came from. We only know her as Picards dearest and most trusted friend with unlimited amounts of wisdom.

Slightly off-topic, but not really given the title of the thread - what did people here think of Whoopi Goldberg on Star Trek? I personally believe it was the best role I've ever seen her in, although I've only seen her in '90s and 2000s movies, which were mostly lame (I'm sure "The Color Purple" is much more impressive). I love her caring and sympathetic, but also affectionately mocking interactions with the crew when she's giving them advice and the way she gave dramatic weight to key events in some of the most intense episodes with her ominous warnings in "Q Who", "The Best of Both Worlds", and "Yesterday's Enterprise".

Does anyone have favourite Guinan scenes? I think mine is when she stabs and insults Q in "Deja Q"...a big reason for why that's one of the episodes I love most. I also love the fact that she introduced Worf to prune juice and her conversation with his earth parents. She and Riker teaching Wesley how to woo a woman is one of my favourite early season moments on Star Trek.

"Shut up, kid! Now tell me about my eyes."

Yeah, because while Guinan actually offers words of wisdom and insight, Troi usually just says "how do you FEEL about it?".

My favorite character by far! She does just pop into the show without any explanation. With the many years and episodes with Guinan we know very little about her. Guinan is key to the weird episodes of altered time lines and the past and future....Janeway could have used her:lol:

Having just rewatched Time's Arrow, I've been giving this topic some thought and I have to say I think she's wonderful in the role. Very different to most of her other stuff, she makes a perfect character in the series and has a very intriguing relationship with Picard. A great character and a great performance.

I heard she would have been in the latest season of Enterprise if it hadn't been cancelled. That would have been interesting. At the same time, I think it might have also shown, like "In a Mirror, Darkly", that the show couldn't really excel unless it was feeding off the rich history of previous Star Trek series.

I loved Whoopi, when she was on TNG.

But then she joined "The View", and everything that comes out of her mouth is shit.

I quite liked Guinan, and thought that Whoopi was great in the role.

I wonder though, why, in her first episode, did she lie to Wesley and say she didn't know Picard before coming aboard the Enterprise?

I don't think it was lying so much as a continuity error. The writers probably hadn't decided on a backstory for her at that point, and then when they did, it contradicted what she said in that episode.

Whoopi Goldberg was a Huge fan of the show and i beleive some what inspired by Nichelle Nichols Lt Uhura.
So when the producers found this out I beleive they asked her ( she may have asked them).
they found a small role for her. and being that she was a bigger box office draw that could pull in veiwers, we ended up with the Guinan Character.

She's better than Joy Behar, I can tell ya that....

Still...I thnk Whoopi as Guinan on "The View" would've been DANG good.

Next time Elizabeth offers Joy "Kool-Aid" (inside joke), Whoopi could reply, "How about prune juice?"

Excellent character, over all.

I like Guinan. My favourite scene is the one where Troi loses her empathic ability and Guinan shows her she's a (good) counsillor by gunning for her job. Much better than Troi ever could be.

I'm on season 3 as well. Its funny when you think of all the wacky characters that Whoopi has played in her career. It would seem that she is miscasted, but she plays her character really excellent. I would agree, probably the best or one of her best characters in her career.

I wasn't sure about her when she first started but boy did she do a great job. She made her niche and moved right in. Absolutely wonderful.

As for her political views and the View; I don't agree with much I've heard her say.

But she is a person of integrity. She recently publicly apologized to Bill O'Reilly for an incorrect accusation she made on his show. I respect her even more for doing so.
