Who would you like to see write for Doctor Who? [slight spoilers]

Why not tell a misanthrope about it instead then?
I did, though I probably shouldn't have. I'm sorry.
And who was that?
This topic's about people who should write for Doctor Who.
Was it? People seemed to be talking about musicals.
Someone suggested Ben Elton. The closest thing Ben Elton's done to sci-fi is that dreadful musical. Which is why it's on topic. Do keep up.

Oh yeah, I'd forgotten that. They showed it at the Millenium Dome. It was alright.

Yes but hiring a writer with no experience of sci-fi can work, after all when RTD hired Moffat he was hiring a sitcom writer.
Mmm, but Moffat had some form. He wrote Continuity Errors, was a noted DW fan, and was known as a capable writer in general. Of course, now I've said that, RTD wrote Damaged Goods, was a noted DW fan, and was known as a capable writer in general. And he was a complete buffooning disaster.

Yes, that's right, bringing Doctor Who back from the dead, turning it into one of the biggest hits in Great Britain, winning multiple awards including a BAFTA for Best Drama Series, and regularly scoring millions of viewers for a revival of an old sci-fi series that had been dead for the better part of twenty years -- that's a real complete buffooning disaster, that. ;)

ETA:

I for one don't see why being a good "sci-fi writer" -- whatever the hell that means -- should matter. The question should be how well the prospective writer can write, period. Setting is less important than characterization and theme.

Moffat is doing a pretty job on his own. He understands what a plot is and he's pretty darn good at writing suspense...not mystery, but suspense. I'm hanging on this guy's every word.

I'll reiterate what I said earleir: Iain M Banks. Finally figured out why.

The Culture is a vast and wonderful uytopia... wiht some serious darkness underneath. So, a society like the Culture, and the Doctor arrives, and he then stays out of trouble. Badly.

Find a copy of Ben Aaranovich's The Also People, one of the New Adventures. :)

Rob Shearman was recently interviewed, and he mentioned something interesting...
Shearman’s a big fan of the new Doctor, Matt Smith: “What’s great about him is that he’s genuinely nuts.

“I’ve been to a few of the readthroughs and you just hear this strange take on the lines because Matt is actually filtering them.

“What could actually be a fairly formulaic thing to say suddenly, in Matt’s head, becomes quite alien and weird.”

Hmm. Why would Shearman be at a script readthrough...?

This might be way out there and would never happen but I think it would be awesome if Christopher Nolan wrote a two parter for Who. I think he'd create a really gritty, epic, esoteric Doctor Who episode. Probably companion light but who knows. I just had a thought of this the other day. The other person and I'm not sure if this has been brought up in the thread since I've not gone through it and I know he did some issues of the Old Who comics is...Grant Morrison.
