Who Would Be Your Choice?

Bry_Sinclair

Vice Admiral
Admiral
As everyone knows when VOY was being developed the plan was to include Ro, though Michelle Forbes turned it down, there were also rumours abound that characters from "Lower Decks" would be included in the new show though never did (other than Taurik's twin brother).

So imagine you're one of the PTB involved in making Voyager and you have to choose one established character to carry over to the new series, who would you choose?

You have all of TNG and the first two seasons of DS9 to choose from, which recurring or guest character would you want to see take a more prominent role in the show (they can fulfil any post on the new starships senior staff, so if you have another Captain in mind then that'll be accepted)? You can only choose one and no main cast from the previous two series (so O'Brien can't get another transfer).

They certainly couldn't have Harry Kim and Miles O'Brien on the same ship. The two characters' sheer bad luck would combine and destructively interfere each other, with the catastrophic equivalent of having 13 black cats cross your flight path, while flying under 13 ladders and shattering 1,313 mirrors on Friday, Stardate 13131.3

Voyager would suffer multiple systems failures, causing a massive warp core breach, ending the series before the first act was up.

He seemed a bit tougher, more determined. Maybe he could have talked Janeway out of some of her more appalling decisions.

Cal Hudson instead of Chak maybe.
That would have been interesting. I know Cal and Ben were supposed to have been at Starfleet Academy together, but Bernie Casey was several years older than Avery Brooks and would have looked even older next to Kate Mulgrew. I think they would have had to come up with some kind of in-universe explanation as to why he was just a lieutenant commander when he joined the Maquis (e.g., a late entry to Starfleet Academy).

In the Navy, only 70% of LCDR's make Commander, and only about 55% of officers overall. He might have been passed over for promotion.

Ensign Robin Lefler.

She'd be a Lt. j.g. by the time Voyager is launched. She comes aboard as Operations Officer, and is a mentor to Ensign Kim, who just got out of the Academy and functions like Worf in TNG season 1.

She'd have been great on Voyager, except...

- 'Hello, Ms. Judd? This is Rick Berman the producer of Star Trek. That's Berman. B-E-R-M-A-N. Well, anyways, I heard you're Hollywood's next it-girl and your agent told me that you'll have a leading role next year alongside Morgan Freeman. But instead of acting in movies, how'd you like to be in the new Star Trek series? It's called Voyager, and you'd have one of the top seven biggest roles in the show.'

You never know. She might have accepted. It's no stranger a possibility than Bernie Casey, who has had a lengthy career before his DS9 appearance. (Big reason why he was a 'Special Guest Star'.)

And I do like the idea of Cal Hudson onboard.

We could have Nurse Ogawa on VOYAGER. Obviously the head nurse, but also training to be a full doctor herself. Kes can still become a nurse, but would answer to her. Both could be mentors to The Doctor for bedside manner and personality growth.

Maybe blasphemy, but Nick Locarno instead of Tom Paris.

I love Tom Paris, but having finally seen the episode with Locarno, the two are EXACTLY the same bar their names, and Nick being a tad darker, with the manipulative side to his character. That would make for a much more interesting redemption arc and conflicts on Voyager, especially with his relationship with B'Elanna.

Otherwise, Ro Laren. She'd be Chakotay's second in command, and end up working with Tuvok in security. She'd be friends with B'Elanna, but as a mentor, carrying to get her to keep her temper in check. And she'd be close with Seska, and absolutely incensed when she's revealed to be a Cardassian.

Final candidate, Sakonna, from (I think) "the Maquis." Make her be that Vulcan woman we saw in "Repression."

The idea is these aren't character who will appear as well as the VOY cast we got but would be there in place of them (ie Robin Lefler as Ops Manager, Alyssa Ogawa as Chief Medical Officer, Ro Laren as Chief of Security).

Given her role in "The Maquis" I could totally see her leading her own Maquis cell, commanding a raider, and becoming Voyager's new First Officer.

Q, the time he became human. A 7 year stay under Janeway's discipline would probably have taught him a lot about humanity :)

I would have liked the Lower Decks Bajoran girl Sito Jaxa showing up on the Maquis ship, with a thing of the federation having left her in a cardassian prison, and the maquis springing her, and her having a hard time being a starfleet crew member because of that. Have her under Tuvok, show up as a security officer ocasionally, have her ready to step in incase anybody jumped ship.

Have her on as Ops Manager (seeing as how that was the role she was being trained up on before she left the E-D) to replace Kim, having a young Bajoran who'd had a hard time at the Academy, been given an incredible opportunity by Picard to sort out her career, sent on a top secret mission, captured and tortured for months, then was either sprung from captivity or managed to escape to then turn her back on Starfleet and join the Maquis would be a far more compelling and interesting back story than just being a rookie goody two shoes.
