Who will the Villain Be??? ***POSSIBLE SPOILER ALERT****

Why not have Harry Mudd AND the Klingons in the same movie? Maybe Harry could accidentally spark an interstellar crisis that drags the Klingons into conflict with the Federation and the movie is spent trying to correct Mudd's tragic mistake?

I was hoping for Mudd and the orion syndicate! :p

While not (initially) a central antagonist, it would be interesting if Gary Mitchell appeared in the sequel as an evil counterpart to Kirk. He's just a bit more of a reckless, arrogant jerk (James Franco could play someone like that perfectly). At first, Kirk enjoys Mitchell's company a little too well, to the point where McCoy, Spock and Uhurra express concern over Mitchell's influence. Gradually the two men wind up opposing each other (but not so extremely as Khan [at first anyway]). While something happens to Mitchell that finally pushes him over the edge it doesn't have to be ESP. As it would turn out, Gary Mitchell's descent into the darkside in "Where No Man Has Gone Before" was always inevitable, psychic powers merely sped it up.

How about the Gorn? (more like the original, than the Enterprise version.)
I saw Rand mentioned earlier
I think Laura Vandervoort would fit that role perfectly!

Here is JJ's version of the Gorn, supposedly from the blurry background of Rura Penthe (along with a salt vampire).

But it seemed such a small bit and I don't recall them mentioned by name, still it could be them?
but they'd have to lose the blue eyes, lol

J.J.'s Gorn looks alright, though I imagine they'd have to CGI in some reptillian-looking eyes or ones similar to the original TOS design(multifaceted and silver). I dunno if the Gorn could carry a whole film by themselves, though. There hasn't been a lot established about them in TREK lore over the last 40 years. They wouldn't be a particularly fleshed-out adversary for a lot of fans and casual viewers to really care about and devote two hours to watching.

"So I've been wondering - not much has been established about the Gorn, canonically speaking... "

Do the Gorn even talk?

The main villain will be Jimmy Soong, the son of Arik and father (or grandfather) of Noonien Soong. Played by Brent Spiner, of course, he will create an army of lifelike robots who attempt to destroy the earth.

Just for fun, Jimmy may decide halfway through the movie to pull on a deerstalker and play Sherlock Holmes, or start practicing his lounge act.

Seriously, I think having Trelane, Q, or any god-like being in the movie is an awful idea. If the antagonist is so vastly more powerful than the protagonists, there's no way to get real conflict or dramatic tension, unless you severely bracket those problems (i.e., putting humanity on trial but having to "play fair"). They're decent characters for episodic television (especially when they're just setting up the action), but I don't think they'd be good for a movie.

It very likely to me that a Gorn will appear at some point in Abrams' series. The sheer number of TOS references in the first movie alone speak to their love of classic shout outs. It would be funny though if it wasn't a villain at all, but a crewmember. And not a security officer either, but like a botanist or a medic.

I saw the list of possible "villains" and none of them really seem too encouraging except Gary Mitchell...because that would offer up a lot of dramatic possibilities, and probably some cool superhuman FX. I don't want to see the Klingons AGAIN.

RAMA

I don't know if Gary Mitchell should be the villain, but I'd love to see Gary Lockwood get a cameo somewhere in the film.

I think it's high time Gary Mitchell makes an appearance. Even in the alternate/changed timeline so much else remained relatively intact...why not Kirk and Gary being good friends? Just because we didn't see him in TREK 2009 didn't mean they weren't at the Academy at the same time!

Kirk was at the Academy at a different time in the NuUniverse. He may not have met Gary this time.
There's also the fact that the nuVerse Kirk has not yet been (and, for all we know, might never become) an Academy instructor, which was how (Lt.) Kirk and (Cadet/Midshipman) Mitchell met in the PrimeVerse.

I sympathise, but you guys have seen the last movie, right? :D
