Who will be Discovery's next First Officer?

Although I don't know why the show is continuing to play coy about this and won't just come out and confirm it one way or the other.
They're still adhering to Fuller's wish not to make the show about the senior officers, despite every other senior staff position being filled by someone in the main or recurring cast.

Look at all you meat-bigots - - only considering organics. Why aren't you considering a hologram for the job? Someone's got to break the photonic ceiling. SMH

lol

Yeah, that seems to be a trend right now.

Though, it is rather interesting to watch and see how people have to know who the various officers are in the ships' chain of command.

I think it would actually be cool to find out the Voyager J is captained by a 800 year old VOY EMH. Maybe he will transfer over temporarily for a stint as first officer, giving them the benefit of his experience being a fish out of water.

I'm all for Holographic Rights... but I have to wonder about a Captain who falters if someone blinks the wrong way at them. :p

Oh my god, that was the stupidest thing ever.

PG should have sat there blinking like a fool until someone asked her why she was doing that. She'd have answered in that cocky tone she loves, and they'd have laughed at her (that flaw having being corrected 900 years ago) and then they'd call her a primitive.

Nah, it’s honestly not about having to know; you’re kinda over-reading some of those comments. I realise you don’t care and that’s absolutely fine but please try not to be quite so dismissive of all those who don’t necessarily see it the way you do.

It’s not even about “chain of command” (it’s a TV show FFS) but the role a character has on the ship plays to their motivations and interactions with other characters and I just don’t understand why the production team still feel the need to be so ambiguous about it when the whole Fuller “lower decks” concept is long gone for Discovery (if it was ever really there) and we now have it done properly in the actual Lower Decks — which, interestingly, has no problem establishing who the senior officers are, even if they are only in the background and not main characters.

As much as I dislike Lower Decks, Discovery could solve the issue of having Burnham as the star and not be in command by following how Lower Decks has non-command officers as the stars of their show.

If we're going by Lower Decks logic, remember that Ensign Beckett Mariner served as first officer under Captain Amina Ramsey when she briefly commanded the ship. So, there's still a chance for Ensign Sylvia Tilly.

Seriously, though, Saru should just promote everybody one step (except for Reno and Burnham), for all their bravery and heroism in Season 2 and the time jump to Season 3. Tilly can be a full lieutenant, given all the bridge duties she's been doing.

I'm still holding out hope for Matt Damon to make a fleeting cameo as Discovery's Chief Engineer.

With due respect, I think you're over-reading my amusement. And, I do care enough to share who I think the next first officer will be. However, the lists and analysis are amusing to me. And I don't like the digs at Discovery in some posts so I am channeling my frustration in to amusement.

I will be sure to be more clear in my sarcasm. Also, I do care, just not to the same degree.

I feel like the team is focused on specific characters and will address those as the plot demands it. Now, I think your observation is fair and hope it is clarified but I don't think it's ambiguous beyond "The story doesn't require it."

I don't think Tilly is at a point where she can make a tough call or would be completely with it if everything was on her. Maybe by towards the end of the series, but not where she is now.

Keyla Detmer. At this point, she’s the most fully-developed character who isn’t a member of the main cast.

A lot of people like Nilsson, but she’s barely spoken more than 3 lines of dialogue throughout the entire series.

Maybe that’s what they’re going to use in their favour...? Nilsson is something of a blank canvas at this point; they can paint her back-story any which way they want...?

I’m curious to see what they do but I have particularly stein feelings other than that Tilly would be wildly inappropriate and I don’t think it should be Willa given what they have set up so far.

Recovering Nhan or a new character 3189 command officer would be perhaps the best choices.

We’ll see.

5 lines of dialog vs 3 lines of dialog. At this point it’s anyone’s game.

The problem with Stamets or Reno is their temperament and their irreplaceability in engineering. I’d guess either a future person or one of the secondary cast in the bridge crew.

I'll go with Nilsson, but with the caveat that she still will be basically a secondary character. I don't think her presence on the show will be that much greater than Ellen Landry's in Season 1 or Nhan's in Season 2. She'll be there to serve a role on the ship, but the focus will still be on Burnham, Saru, etc.
