Poor Sulu. This poll means a lot to him.
You think George Takei is checking this poll every hour? :D
I like Sulu more as a captain.

He [Tom] is winning. What was so great about him? I never found him to be all that great of a character.
He's not my favourite character either, but he's a good helmsman. If I think of who "saved the ship" the most, it must be Tom. He knows how to fly anything.

Tom Paris, by a wide margin, as he was the most realized character of the bunch.

The less said about Wesley the Wunderkid the better.

Geordi didn't come into his own until he became chief engineer.

Travis Mayweather was, in many episodes, a glorified extra.

Geoge Takei made Sulu memorable, but he was never given much development as a character, particularly after the first season.

That about sums it up.

What about that saucy Trill lady who was looked like she was after a bit of the "Riker manoeuvre" in Insurrection? Or that one that got borgified? Or that guy from Robocop? All of these were more memorable than Travis, so why aren't they here?

I never noticed a robocop in st.... I should pay closer attention.

Which guy from Robocop as I can think of several

Peter Weller (Murphy in Robocop) who played Paxton in ENT "Demons" & "Terra Prime"

Ronny Cox (Dick Jones in Robocop) who play Jellico in "Chains of Command"

Kurtwood Smith (Boddicker in Robocop) who played the UFP President in TUC as well as Annorax in VOY "Year of Hell"

And less memorable

Miguel Ferrer (Bob Morton in Robocop) who played the Excelsior First Officer in TSFS

I can't vote for any of them. Maybe one day some excellent helmsman will grace our screens in Trek, but not up until today.

Same thing happened in the captain poll. Picard was ahead, there was complaining, some PMs maybe were sent and Kirk was vote-bombed ahead. Because TOS must "dominate". Even this.

Paris! Easily. As a well-behaved cocky jerk, I really resonated with his character, who did not behave. :p

Who is Travis Mayweather? Are we counting extras? :p

The same thing happens in actual votes. When polls seem to favor one side outrageously, it usually works as a wake up call for the opposing side.
