Another vote for Scotty, but with these polls, I'm not sure if we're talking about the person and their job, or the person as a character, who performs that job.

I think Scotty was a great engineer, but I think O'Brien and Trip were better characters. If that makes any sense.

Same thing with Spock in the First Officer's poll. Spock was a fantastic character, but he didn't realy do a whole lot of First Officer-y things.

Ye canna change the outcome of this poll, has to be Scotty with O'Brien as a runner up.

But no love for Olsen? ;)

You know who is a bad engineer? God. Who in their right mind would put the waste ejection unit this close to the recreational area?

IIRC it was next to the entrance to Kirks Quarters...

Now, cross-feeding the main sewage outlet to the food replicator in his quarters, that was getting even with evil duplicate Kirk drinking up all of Scottys good stuff...

I voted for Scotty because he had a true passion for Engineering- he would relax reading technical manuals. The others were good at their jobs, but his was not a job, it was his life...

He was the only one who was ever called a miracle worker.

This is another one where if you just ask for a general favorite, I'm going to go with the classic character who defined the role and say Scotty.

If you asked me which one I'd rather sit down and have a drink with, I'd be tempted to say Geordi or maybe O'Brien...but then again, Scotty's got the good stuff stashed in his quarters, so he'd probably win again....

The same guy who put the part that drips snot upside-down over the mouth.

Good point.

I can't take credit for that, it was part of a comedian's routine that I saw years ago...think it was Gallagher.

My vote is O'Brian, the non-com everyman, solidly loyal, brilliant, with a beautiful scientist wife and a daughter so cute your heart implodes. I want to be O'Brian.

The problem with drinking with O'Brien is that if he were having the real stuff, he'd probably start bitching on and on about his wife...and who'd want to sit through that?

2. Charles “Tripp” Tucker - A likeable character. His death was pointless

Damn, I didn't know Trip died.

I know the show has been off the air for almost 10 years, but I'm currently watching the franchise and watching DS9, VOY, and ENT for the first time, so I wish there had been a spoiler warning.

Oops! Sorry about that! You will probably be disappointed at how he dies. He was a great character, and it was very poorly done.

I choose to believe he didn't die in the way portrayed,
especially since it was in a TNG Holodeck!

In regards to your "spoiler," it was not...

1) Miles O'Brien

Possibly the most human character the franchise has ever seen.

2) Montgomery Scott

Brings a whole lot of charisma to a role that was planned to be minor. I suppose you could say the exact same thing about O'Brien, but unlike O'Brien, he was underutilized.

3) Geordi LaForge

One of those characters the writers never really knew what to do with. He was great when the main threat involved an engineering solution but they never went anywhere with his social life except to be Data's buddy and occasionally inept at romance.

4) Trip Tucker

One of the few saving graces in the mess that was Enterprise.

I invoke the 'Horrible writing' clause to deny the manner in which he died. For all we know, Troi was messing with Riker and adjusted his holonovel! Or Riker programmed Trip to die so he could be there for T'Pol in her grief.

5) B'elana Torres

She was interesting in the first season. After that she just kinda became bland. Her intensity went away and she just became the occasionally suicidal love interest for Paris.

Also, in terms of God's engineering skills, he gave us the ability to use tools but then made all the tools really really deadly. That's like giving a baby a fork and putting him in a room full of wall outlets.

I don't believe that in the history of St, there ever was another engineer who got beat up as often as O'Brien, not by a long shot!

What, no love for Lieutenant Commander Leland T. Lynch? ;)

Seriously, though, this is a tough question for me, as I pretty much love all the main character engineers on Star Trek. Scotty is great, but because of the focus on the Big Three he's hardly in the show sometimes. Geordie is my favorite character from TNG (besides Will Riker), I love Colm Meaney as the down-to-earth O'Brien and B'Elanna is a great character in the tradition of Spock.

But in the end I voted for Trip, as he's not only my favorite character from Enterprise, but also the most likable of all the Star Trek engineers. Connor Trinneer gave the character a wonderful boyish quality. In his performance Trip seems human, real and oftentimes the most contemporary. Plus, he's funny and a true friend to all his comrades.

He didn't die. Virtually all ENT fans regard that episode as invalid.

I'm an ENT fan but had to vote for O'Brien- he's just so cuddly!
