Lots of you quite naturally saying Tom Baker.

You're all wrong, it was Pertwee.
Pertwee was entertaining, but I've never had the urge to write fanfic for his Doctor, as I have for Tom Baker or David Tennant.

I did try out the Venusian lullaby one night when my cat was upset. It worked. :)

I've put Davison as he was my first but essentially he, Tom Baker & Troughton are neck and neck as my top three.

Pertwee is my personal choice, my "first" is the 7th but I watched a lot of reruns and Pertwee was my favourite.

I can't choose a best because they're all the best. I can't even choose a favourite because I love so many. My top 5 (in chronological order) are Davison, Baker (Colin), Tennant, Smith, and Whittaker.

This. Tom Baker was my first Doctor and the Doctor that always stands out, in my mind, as the quintessential Doctor.
"Would you like a jelly baby?"

There was a time when you could always spot the Doctor Who fans at conventions, since they usually wore some version of the scarf.

Best acting? Best scripts? Best acting to complement or overcome scripts? T Baker, Hartnell, C Baker, and Capaldi instantly come to mind.

Interestingly, Colin Baker doesn't have any votes in the poll at this time. ;)

Because I hadn't noticed the poll yet :techman:

But, it was an honest vote. I consider Colin Baker to be the best Doctor (solely based on his TV adventures), with Matt Smith as a close second and Patrick Troughton almost tied with him. When I think of The Doctor in general, its always one of them off the top of my head. As good as Tom baker is, I do consider him a bit overrated. I've seen most of his stories (all of them up until right before Romana 1 left, and then the last story), and while he's a very good Doctor, I don't think the length of his reign as Doctor should be considered an indication of how good he was.

That's just my opinion, though. I think almost every Doctor is great, with the exceptions of post-Mel 7th and the 13th (although 7's downfall and 13's lameness are not the fault of McCoy or Whitaker, they both got screwed by generally terrible writing, although McCoy at least got a few good stories even when his Doctor was in his lesser incarnation).

I like all the Doctors. I’ll watch any of them. I wish we had more McGann, though I do have the Big Finish audios and the Eighth Doctor Adventures books. I’d be happy if Eccleston some day agreed to do some BF. I’m glad BF managed to do some War Doctor stories with John Hurt before he died.

Heck, I’d like to have seen the Richard E. Grant Doctor from Scream of the Shalka get more development. Grant’s performance starts off not very well, I thought, but it improves from episode to episode. And to be fair a few of the cast start off sounding like they’re just reading their lines rather than acting them. Whether it was unfamiliarity with voice-only acting or poor direction, the cast generally improved as they went along.

If I judged them by their TV showcase alone, I'd probably rate McGann, one of top three Doctors ever, as last. Similarly, Colin and Sylv would also be way lower, because both had disastrous first seasons and barely salvaged their persona at their last (though Sylv was way better served than Colin, admittedly). So I can't judge them by TV alone, and I don't have to. Most of the Doctors still continue performing as such, and have long since salvaged or the very least rounded their performances as the Doctor plausibly and satisfyingly.

I'll post my Doctors list in a little while.

I think we’ve been incredibly lucky to have a slate of Doctors in the modern era that are consummate performers and successful actors in their own right beyond Doctor Who. For a long time Ecclestone was my fav, then Tennant came along... and Smith. Then Capaldi recovered from a dreadful first series to become ‘my’ Doctor.

But then... fully formed like a breath of fresh air combined with a sunny day, Whittaker literally dropped from above and stole the goddamn title. My greatest hope: that the streak will continue and we’ll see another home run after she’s ready to move on.

Pertwee is my favourite, a mixture of nostalgia and the quality of the stories I guess. I used to get the tapes of the Pertwee shows out the library all the time as a kid (this was in the intervening years between the old series and the new).

I don't understand how Matt Baker is further ahead then Tenant in the poll. Don't get me wrong, I like Baker, but the writing was way sharper during the DT years, and the Rory/Amy/Doctor pseudo-love-triangle got really old after a while. Rory seriously got the short end of the stick and it was never really addressed. I mean, waiting for her for nearly 2000 years, that would destroy your mind. Sometimes if I have to wait for a bus for longer than an hour I feel like punching a wall.
