Who Was The Best Actor on Voyager?

Fedor

Ensign

For me, I actually thought it was the Doctor, Robert Picardo. He reminded me of Alexander Siddig, from DS9.

I thought it was a close second and third between Kate Mulgrew and Robert Beltran.

Robert Duncan McNeill was fourth.

Roxann Dawson and Tim Russ would round out the 5th and 6th spots.

Ethan Phillips and Jeri Ryan were next.

Then, Jennifer Lien and Garrett Wang would close out the rest of the list.

This is just my opinion, so don't freak out fellow Geeks.

I would like to hear some of your choices.

Very hard to say. The amount of different stuff that each got do was quite varied, some characters got LOTS of airtime, some changed / evolved very little, and others were under-utilized.

I liked the Doctor character too, and think Robert Picardo was very good (as usual). Then again, of all the characters, the EMH arguably developed the most over the course of the show - from a being who just wanted to be able to turn HIMSELF off when there was nothing to do, to the guy who saved the day in 'Message In A Bottle' (one of my all-time favourite Trek episodes).

Robert Beltran got a few good(-ish) episodes, but I think Chakotay was, for the most part, under-used.

Garret Wang / Harry Kim. Liked the character (and his buddy dynamic with Tom Paris), but his roles otherwise seemed to be getting personally involved with alien females and/or almost dying when required.

For me its

Dawson > Ryan >Picardo > Russ > McNeill > Lien (although she was clearly improving and getting quite good) > Mulgrew (her acting was too stagey/fake for me, all very thought out poses and the like) > Beltran > Wang

On my recent watching of Voyager, I noticed how much I started to really like Seven of Nine for reasons other than her sex appeal. Jeri Ryan, even though I wish she was more emotional as Seven, brought a lot to the role and did a great job with it. Perhaps Picardo might be the best "actor" on the show, but Ryan has to be up there. If I were to rank the actors though:

Ryan
Picardo
Dawson
Mulgrew
Russ
Lien
Phillips
McNeill
Beltran
Wang (Even though he was awesome in Timeless, to be fair)

The Neural gel packs were totally believable! After that I thought the Doctor always gave a terrific performance- always out acting the others.

Picardo, Beltran, and Wang are in a three way tie for last place in my book. Wang was just not a great actor (Timeless was great, though). Beltran was slightly better, but it was obvious he didn't give a damn in the later seasons. Picardo is a decent actor, but the hammy way he chose to play the doctor grated on my nerves. He's fine as comic relief or the focus of an occasional subplot. But once they started giving him more screen time, all that cheesiness and over acting felt like a chore to sit through.

I'm not sure if I should praise or slam Phillips. It's been said that Neelix was the Jarjar Binks of Trek, and I couldn't agree more. Phillips, however, seemed committed to the role (crapfest or no), and it's possible Neelix might have been worse with a less skilled actor.

Ryan did a great job as 2 of D. Sorry, I meant T of A. No, wait, it's 7 of 9. The writers developed that character well and she made a sexy cyborg someone I felt for.

I loved Lien as Kes. I think her best episode was Warlord. It was one of her last and it makes me wonder what else she might have done.

Mulgrew tops my list, though I wish she'd lighten up on the Katharine Hepburn impression.

No question for me: Jeri Ryan. Particularly in those episodes where she not only played her own character, but also the Doctor - and the one where Seven had the Borg equivalent of multiple-personality disorder - she was completely believable as a Ferengi, a Vulcan, a Klingon, a child, and the other assimilated people whose memories she had.

Robert Picardo would have to be my choice for best actor. He could salvage even the worst scripts.

Jeri Ryan and Roxan Dawson were also standouts in my view, with Dawson often serving as a strong dramatic foil for other characters (prior to the arrival of Seven of Nine).

Another actor I enjoyed watching was Ethan Phillips. Whilst I know people had mixed feelings regarding his character, I always felt he turned in excellent performances. 'Jetrel' was magnificent.

Without doubt the worst actor was Garrett Wang. His delivery always seemed so forced and uncomfortable. It's a shame because I think the whole 'rookie' character is a nice concept that could have been done better in the hands of another actor.

Kurtwood Smith. A demented deranged villain, but with style.

Voyager's single best mad scientist.

.

It's easy to say Robert Picardo as the Doctor, but he was easily the best written character so he had more to work with. Ethan Phillips also did very well, particularly as he had a rather unpopular character.

Robert Duncan McNeill was good as was Jeri Ryan.

Roxann Dawson, Robert Beltran, Garrett Wang and Jennifer Lien were all adequate. Beltran could probably have done better if he wanted to.

I REALLY didn't care for Kate Mulgrew and Tim Russ.

Best?
