Who was Future Guy going to be?

Nope. That's why I'm not reading or posting in the "Star Trek XI" section, which is where such talk belongs.

TREK flows together without many problems for the most part. Not even the STAR WARS universe has as many wink-wink nods to the fanbase as TREK tends to.

Yep. Umpteen times each. But there still aren't as many nods and winks overall as we've gotten in 10 feature films, 22 cartoons and 704 live action episodes.;)

The closest they got to answering who Future Guy was way back in Cold Front. Daniels describes himself as from the 31st Century, while whoever gives the Suliban their orders came from an early time and then points to a dot on his timeline. He then goes on to say that they can only communicate with the past. Although in Storm Front Part II, Silik is under orders to steal a component from Vosk's conduit machine, presumably so that Future Guy is no longer confined.

My personal favourite theory is the simpliest one. A Romulan attempting to destablise the 22nd Century and allow his Empire to continue its expansion plans. Although I would personally weave in some personal motivation to Future Guy too... Perhaps that far in the future, his race is almost extinct. The eventual result of a weapon used on his ancestors at the close of the war. The effects of this took several centuries (undetected, or misdiagnosed during TOS/TNG) to become apparent, making the entire Romulan people sterile.

If I were writing Seasons 5 thru 7, I'd probably promote Archer and place him in the Harry S Truman mould... forced to end a war by the harshest means, forge an alliance and offer aid to fallen allies. Of course, that means some extraordinary event removes Nathan Samuels from office and puts Archer into another role few think he deserves to hold.

A moment which is dismissed quite off-handedly, excited me a lot back when Shockwave, Part II aired. The scene in which Archer, trapped in that 31st Century library spots a book title - The Romulan Star Empire, before Daniels remarks "Maybe you shouldn't be reading that".

Slappy White.

Now THAT would have been totally out of the blue and historic for the franchise.

a romulan would fit in with say the romulan influence with certain vulcans was behind the thing about vulcans thinking time travel was impossible.
;)

and it makes sense for him to warn about the xindi attack since the sphere builders were a threat to most of the alpha quadrant.

I think if we held a poll in here "Romulan" would get more votes than any answer other than, probably, "Who Knows?" or "Not a Clue." Dating all the way back to the premiere episode the silhouette of Future Guy in his transmission stream looked a little Romulan-like. The deep, booming voice reminiscent of many haughty Romulan officers and Senators on TNG and DS9...the smooth, almost bowl-cut looking haircut...a hint(?) of something that looked like a pointed ear.

But logically the Romulans would have enhanced Romulans. ... Oh wait, logic from the writers? What was I thinking. ... It probably would have been a Romulan. ;)
