Although I do appreciate the gesture J.J. and his loyal team have made to the fans by not ignoring the rich history Trek has created for almost 40 years now (I say "almost" because there was no new productions going on last year and there was that huge gap in the 70s), I'm thinking they probably should have ignored what came before and started over completely with a new interpretation and an older cast roughly the same age of the original cast when they started. Chris Pine may be 27, but I hope this young Kirk, who will probably be a Captain, isn't. Yikes! 29 and a half would be a little bit more believable, but even then. Or maybe this is normal in the real US Navy?
I wouldn't have mind seeing a brand spanking new USS Enterprise NCC-1701 with a design out of this world. Considering how cool the new Transformers looked and the modern Battlestar Galactica. But by trying to closely stick to the original timeline/universe and thus, the original Matt Jefferies design, they'll have to be conservative when updating the look of the ship. Least the fan boys call bullshit on their promise to "stay true".
And finally, if you're going to title the movie simply Star Trek, why not get rid of the time travel plot (I'm taking a bold step in assuming the rumors are true, wish me luck) and stick with the fresh and original main story of the screenplay (I'm also taking a bold step in assuming the script is fresh and original, but I'm going to give it up to Nimoy, who isn't easily impressed)? Why carry the old baggage of an old Nimoy Spock and run the risk of confusing a new audience? If his scenes are him reflecting on the past, you might ruin some of the suspense with Spock's fate being secured.
