Who Wanted This To Be A Remake? Who Didn't?

Although I do appreciate the gesture J.J. and his loyal team have made to the fans by not ignoring the rich history Trek has created for almost 40 years now (I say "almost" because there was no new productions going on last year and there was that huge gap in the 70s), I'm thinking they probably should have ignored what came before and started over completely with a new interpretation and an older cast roughly the same age of the original cast when they started. Chris Pine may be 27, but I hope this young Kirk, who will probably be a Captain, isn't. Yikes! 29 and a half would be a little bit more believable, but even then. Or maybe this is normal in the real US Navy?

I wouldn't have mind seeing a brand spanking new USS Enterprise NCC-1701 with a design out of this world. Considering how cool the new Transformers looked and the modern Battlestar Galactica. But by trying to closely stick to the original timeline/universe and thus, the original Matt Jefferies design, they'll have to be conservative when updating the look of the ship. Least the fan boys call bullshit on their promise to "stay true".

And finally, if you're going to title the movie simply Star Trek, why not get rid of the time travel plot (I'm taking a bold step in assuming the rumors are true, wish me luck) and stick with the fresh and original main story of the screenplay (I'm also taking a bold step in assuming the script is fresh and original, but I'm going to give it up to Nimoy, who isn't easily impressed)? Why carry the old baggage of an old Nimoy Spock and run the risk of confusing a new audience? If his scenes are him reflecting on the past, you might ruin some of the suspense with Spock's fate being secured.

I don't see a clear option for: No remake,no reimagining, just carry the universe forward. Because that is what I would have wanted. Pick up after the events of DS9 and Voyager because you a whole range of possibilites there. Whose exploring strange new worlds? What of the devastation and the rebuilding of cardassia? What about the bajorans? Are the Borg really dead? Are the dominion changed now the the Odo has returned to the great link?

Yes, I was looking for a remake. Alas no, we have something that (so far) sounds very fan-wanky.

There are so many possibilities within the 'current' Trek universe that I don't see the need for a remake. A TOS prequel isn't exactly what I had in mind for Trek XI, and it took me a while to get used to the idea of re-casting these iconic characters, but so far I've been pretty pleased with the actors they've chosen to fulfill the roles.

The only one I'm not sure about is Pegg as Scotty, but I like the actor, so we'll see.

No remake for me.

We should have been carrying on or jumping into the future ideally (at the very least a Titan or New Frontier style set of stories). Otherwise it should have been a complete reimagining on the other side of 2010.

A remake? Feh.

A new story with Kirk, Spock and the gang? Sure, I'll give it a try.

No desire to see any TNG+ era stuff.

I didn't care.

Still don't.

I want it to be good. A good remake, a good continuation, whatever. Just give me two quality hours of Star Trek on the big screen.

No remakes for me. Whether it's Miami Vice, Star Trek, Halloween, and whatever else Hollywood plans to remake.

It is a remake. Sort of.

Despite Leonard Nimoy's appearance I seriously doubt this will slaveishly adhere to canon. One way or the other, they are going to try and keep us guessing right up to the movie comes out. From a business point of view, its best not to. No point in alienating the casual or hardcore fan.

Even though it looks like they are broadly following canon, there are going to be more than a few moments that will have the fanboys shouting and screaming.

Personally, I'm with the "New Star Trek with Kirk & Spock but not a remake as such" crowd. I've no problem with updating the sets, special effects and actors, and for my money they could have thrown the vast majority of canon out the window.

Keep the same concept. Just update it. Would not have wanted to see Spock as a woman or anything like that...

I could have gone for a Titan movie, with Riker as Captain. But all the other post-TNG ideas just don't interest me at all. I loved DS9, but I have no desire to revisit Cardassia or the Dominion or any of those other storylines again. And jumping forward with an entire NEW crew is fine for a TV series, but not a movie (unless they're gonna hire a bunch of big-time actors for it, which isn't likely).

Personally I love the direction Abrams is going in. The Star Trek universe was just getting a little too cluttered and complex before (especially for newbies), so it's a smart idea to refocus the franchise back on it's roots.

I second that.

That's pretty much my take on the whole thing, too.

I secretly want this movie to succeed so that the whole trek series can go through the HD/remasterisation process.

I also wish it'll be good because I like "Star Trek" in general and I wouldn't wish it to fail just because I don't like the premise or something.

I must admit I was hoping for something new because except with a Peter Jackson miracle I think they started on the wrong foot. By adhering to the old codes they risk losing new people lured in by the media buzz, by pandering to the new people they risk losing the old fans lured in by the old codes. They've decided to walk on a tightrope, good luck to them!

I'm not sure about remakes and reboots. It's just not as important as other factors.

I've seen horrid reboots (Flash Gordon, Lost in Space), and good reboots (BSG). It depends on if the end result is *good*, not whether or not it's canon or not canon. Honestly the next thread I see worrying about cannon will make me want to shoot the poster out of a cannon.

What I'd want ideally is the same approach as X-men. It's X-men, but they're telling the story as though nobody knows who Cyclops and Wolverine are. They're making a great movie that just so happens to be about a group of mutants. Generally, I like how Marvel's handling Spidey as well -- pretty much the same thing. Make a great movie, and change things only when the origenal idea gets in the way. Changing the spider from a gamma irradiated spider to a genetically modified spider didn't kill Spiderman, so I don't think changing the look of the Trek sets is going to kill it.

Have a beer and relax.

so what is that on your poll anyway?

I'm glad it's not going to be a remake. That would invalidate everything that came before.

Why? Do your Trek DVDs and novels have a destruct code that will be executed on December 25th, 2008?

As for where I voted, I couldn't care less about canon. I don't think that the Trek 'universe' is anything special nor do I think that the accumulated detritus from years of filmed Trek amount to a fetid pile of dingo's kidneys.

Bring back Kirk, Spock and McCoy. Keep the broad strokes the same and ditch the rest.

What I want: James T. Kirk's horrid death undone.

What I won't watch: a film without Shatner.

What I will settle for: a film with Shatner that revamps the production design of TOS but does't erase the broad sweeps of Trek lore.

What I would have really, REALLY wanted: a brand new film with entirely new characters, set during TOS with a revamped production design.

Would've been the best way to go.

And honestly, anyone who thinks "The Adventures of Captain Riker" would have appealed to anyone other than hardcore, long-time Trekkers is beyond deluded.
