that said how old was Adric meant to be?

Well, he was an alien, but by his species standards, he was a teenager (but a highly educated one...well, at least in mathematics).

not sure how him being a teenage, or good at maths make it any different, however to guess I would say he was 16 or 17, which is not quite as bad as killing 14 year old Maria Jackson.

Maria is also a well liked character played by a good actress. The same can not be said about Adric.
He was not very well liked at the time and very few fans were upset to see him go. A lot of fans were not only happy to see him go but, they were happy that it was done in a way that insured he would not be back.

Maria is too happy, but it is Clive I want to see fed into a woodchipper. but if Clive wasn't such a dickhead, then Luke wouldn't look so appealing without Clive for comparison keeping things relatively in perspective.

I don't loath child actors completely. I thought Young Sarah Jane was a delightful little actress. They should bring her back a couple more times... And then they Forrest Gump the two of them into the original pilot of K9 and Friends like trials and tribblations.
