Who should play Lois Lane in the new Superman movie?

I like the Zooey Deschanel idea.

And points for thinking out of the box with Gabrielle Union. (That would almost be worth it just to watch the purists' heads explode.)

I've never been too impressed with Gabrielle Union. If you want a black Lois Lane then Zoe Saldana would be a much better pick. Yes, I know she gets mentioned for a bunch of geek cinema roles, but, hey, she's a good actress.

Zooey Deschanel is my pick that I've continuously hampered on several of these types of posts now. After seeing her performance in "500 Days of Summer" I think she embodies the characteristics that we look for in Lois: sarcasm, wit, feistiness, intelligence, tough as nails attitude but the ability to be tender and loving as well, passion. Somehow though I think we'll get a relative unknown for Lois as well as for Superman. It's way too early in the process to make a good guess yet since we really don't have any candidates other than the fact that it was reported that Natalie Portman said she would have signed for the part if Aronfrosky was hired as director. I wonder, would Gemma Arterton make a good Lois? She seems to be one of the rising "It" actresses right now.

My secondary choice would be Mary Elizabeth Winstead and my third choice would be Anna Kendrick.

I cast this vote. Gabrielle Union.

I've always wanted to see a black Lois Lane ever since I read "I am Curious (Black)" ish of Superman's Girlfriend Lois Lane.

However, there's already been a black Lois Lane in the Dallas Theater revival of the It's Superman musical — Zakiya Young. And she'd be my choice in the new movie.

I am a big proponent of out-of-the-box casting for the new movie. An Asian-American actor as Jimmy Olsen; keep the name change the ethnicity. Hell, if fanbois bitch, he can have dyed red hair.

Or how 'bout a Latino Jimmy? Or Latina Lois? Or a black Perry? Or a multi-ethnic Steve Lombard?

If Superman is to be a Caucasian, blue-eyed, black-haired Kryptonian, then his supporting cast should have a little bit more color. Hell, let's cast another multi-ethinc actor like Dean Cain... remember all the huff about that bit of casting because his eyes weren't blue.

As much as I can't stand the character Lois Lane I really think Erica Durance plays her really well. It would never happen but I'd be happy if it did.

Agreed. In fact, the next Superman movie should be made using the Smallville cast. They're old enough now.

I think most of the ladies suggested are too young. I'm hoping that the film will be set well into Superman's career, with he and Lois in their mid-thirties. Give them some maturity and life-experience. A reboot doesn't mean we have to go all the way back to the beginning.

There are plenty of good suggestions in this thread. Some of my favourites: Lizzy Caplan, Anna Friel, Rebecca Hall, and Zooey Deschanel. Let's hope they avoid another misfire like Kate Bosworth and cast of of those actresses.

I'm also not opposed to the idea of an african-american Lois and think Zoe Saldana would be a terriffic choice.

Oh, how I hate that "fanboi" spelling which seems more toolish to me than the actual fanboys themselves.

It's too bad they omitted the cover on that Lois Lane story, the covers to those Lois Lane comics were awesome: http://www.coverbrowser.com/covers/lois-lane/3

I don't know that I've seen Gabrielle Union act but visually from that picture I could see a Lois.

I remember Beyonce being considered for Lois in the McG/Brett Ratner era, along with Chris Rock for Jimmy Olsen. I don't think I've ever seen Gabrielle Union in anything but she would be an interesting Lois.

I doubt Zooey would attach herself to a franchise like that. I read an interview with her in which she said she doesn't want to make many movies these days, preferring to focus on her music. I agree with this because I like her music more than her acting. I think her acting is very one note. She's pretty much the same character in every movie I've seen her in...I don't see a lot of range there. She certainly looks right for the part, though.

Of the names mentioned so far, I like Anne Hathaway most. Rebecca Hall and Rachel McAdams remind me of Kate Bosworth too much. Also, I always think of Lois Lane as small and mousy. I know Rachel Mcadams is short, but she still looks like a model to me. I think of Lois as small, but also tough and a go-getter, like Dana Delay in the animated Superman series. Carey Mulligan might fit the role.

I propose more "traditional" casting so that the next Superman doesn't become the center of another national discussion about race. People are tired of this issue.

That would be awesome!

but would it be 60 year old Lois hitting on a 20 something years old Superman/Clark, or in some Kingdom Come Future where Lois has aged (yes I know the Joker killed her in kingdom come many years before the story began which is what began Kal's seclusion.) when Kal is immortal and forever young but 50 years since they met has wracked it's toll on the all too human Lois.

Gabby is dull, but so hot you don't care, that she could make a splendid Lois.

After Goldmember, I don't think... Shazam?! I was going to say that screaming Shazam every time she kicked a henchman in the face was too hokey but maybe Bouncy could make an interesting Mary Marvel? And when she meets black Adam for the first time she says "Black Adam? What you smoking cracker?"

After the Justice League cartoon I can't be wowed by 2 hours showing up twice a decade that's disconected tot he rest of the DCU.

If they were going to go with this, my Lois Lane would probably be Carla Gugino (who is, incidentally, in Zack Snyder's SUCKER PUNCH...along with Jon Hamm ;) ). But I highly doubt they'll go with a "mature" cast. Sadly.

Teri Hatcher. I don't care that's she's like 45 she's still hot as all hell. That'd get me to see the movie.
