Who should host the Tonight Show after Jay?

Craig Ferguson. He would definitely breathe some life into the old show.

Craig Ferguson is awesome but I don't think his style would go over well with the TPTB in the earlier time slot.

Now, whoever mentioned Neil Patrick Harris is on to something:

The Tonight Show with Neil Patrick Harris followed by
Late Night with Craig Ferguson
:techman:

David Letterman ;)

If this question was asked 15 years ago, that would be my answer.

Today, I want to see them beg Conan to come back.

He's only mean to Yankee fans.

I mean really, what were you seeing that the rest of us weren't?
You're asking this of a guy with a New York Yankees avatar? Having the temerity to make fun of the Yankees, Conan should have been hauled out in the street and strung up from a lamppost!

Drew Carey is a strong contendor.

God, I hope not. If his hosting duties on TPIR is any indication, he lacks enthusiasm needed to carry a show like the Tonight Show. He was a complete sourpuss when a guy managed to guess the correct amount in a showcase showdown.

I say we make it Conan then we just have a mobius strip of fail and misery of Conan doing the show, not doing well, Leno taking it back over, not doing well wash, rinse, repeat.

I always thought Matthew Perry would be a good Late Night Talk Show host.

Chase Masterson. I heard interviews she did on fandom.com and she is an excellent conversationalist!

Yeah, that Conan was really mean to people.

He kind of was, actually. Not as much as Letterman (of course), but getting there.

He's only mean to Yankee fans.

Yeah, I'm kind of curious/confused as well. If he's referring to making fun of celebrities or politicians in the news, that's the bread and butter of late night shows, and Jay did it as often if not more than Conan did. He certainly wasn't mean to guests, and was much more likely to poke fun at himself during interviews than at others. Some examples of Conan's "meanness" would be nice.

As far as the suggestions go, I think the aforementioned choices of Matthew Perry or Neil Patrick Harris are surprisingly good ideas. They're witty, quick with a retort, and personable. Ellen DeGeneres, Craig Ferguson, Tina Fey, and Anderson Cooper are all good choices as well.

If you've ever seen NBC News' Brian Williams give an interview on the late night circuit, you might think he would make a good host as well. That guy can be funny as hell when he's not being Mr. Serious Anchor.

I'm surprised that Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert haven't been raised as possibilities yet. Stewart seems to be the only host with the gravitas and comedic timing to easily slip into the Tonight Show position and carry as much weight as a Carson. Plus, he's got a huge following of young adults which could help build that demographic as a Tonight Show audience.
