Who no longer cares? (Raise your hand)

It's too early to decide for me. This movie will be big, and I like most of the casting choices.
I still have hope that the new movie will try to build a real bridge to the old Trek and what worked there, but that hope is slowly fading.

Somehow I feel JJ will make a bold, clear cut from established canon. If he does, then indeed, it will be "that other Star Trek" for me.
But if that's true and it ends up as a good movie, being the huge Trek fan that I am, I will probably hope that this "Star Trek canon 2" will evolve into a "franchise of its own", taking chances and making decisions the other shows wouldn't or couldn't.

If it tanks, I will be joining the "I told you it would suck" camp.

"yeah, I'm still pissed at the bastard for declaring TAS non-canonical..."

"What's the quote? Where and when did he say it?"

"Somewhere... In the back of my mind." -Lex Luthor (Superman: The Movie)"

This movie will be: What if they had gone with the Phase II movie idea: Don't change so much. Can you imagine what the TOS movies, FASA RPG, DS9, SCE, and IKS Gorkon would have been like?

I'm taling ADB's Prime Directive RPG, and Pocket Books' Vanguard.

Long Live Star Trek XI, X, XI, XII...

You know what's interesting? Before we knew we were getting JJ Trek, there where some on this board who thought that Treks next step should be a DS9 or VOY or ENT movie. Let me say to the complainers now who no longer care because, well ...who the hell knows why really, are you glad it isnt one of those horrible ideas? An ENT movie? Give me a fucking break. NO ONE would care about that at all, except the 5 people who watched the show.

This is the only way to go, as Trek needs to be financially viable to continue to exist. This is the best way to do that.

The movie's like a freaking year away. The studio is only just beginning the stage of letting people know it exists. You'll know when they want you to care about it, because you begin caring about it.

That's such a sad statement, but it is probably true for an awful lot of sheep.

Don't forget a TNG movie. :D

I'm a DS9 fan and I thought a DS9 movie was a horrible idea.

"DS9? What's that!?"

I care about Star Trek being GOOD and in the long run that's all that matters to this old school fan.

I don't care much about canon as it gets in the way of Star Trek being GOOD, toss it ALL out for all I care.

Its not a reboot. Bad Robot is not giving you the finger. :D

I'd hate to point this out, but it's not 1979 anymore. It's 2008. Old school Trek cant be made anymore, because old school days are over.

That's right - I haven't had to go to class or take a goddamned midterm or final since before most of you were born!

Bwa-ha-ha-ha!

I thought so too. I've never been in favor of a DS9 movie...although admittedly for completely different reasons.

I was too afraid of them FUBARing it (a distinct possibility) and ruining my favorite show.

A DS9 movie would only be for DS9 viewers. There was a 7 year run with a lot of it consisting of a very long arc (especially the last 3 years). What normal, everyday movie go-er wants to see that? It would have been another nail in the TREK Movie coffin.

My Universal Translator blinked out when I hit this post.

Where's Hoshi when I need her?

On Canon...established details are part of what makes it special, what keeps fans coming back for more. I don't think slavish devotion to the tiniest of canon minutia is a formula for success. Nor do I think abandoning everything that makes Trek Trek until it no longer is Trek, except for a label that the suits want as a marketing tool.

First and foremost, tell a good tale. Use what canon you need. If you break it, have a good reason.

The New Doctor Who is a textbook on how to update a venerable scifi property for a new audience, yet hold onto what makes it special, without holding onto the stuff that doesn't work anymore, and may never have worked.

A DS9 direct to DVD film, on the other hand, would be a great thing.

If there's anything I'd feel blase about right now, it would be another TNG movie, or some other movie continuing on the 24th century Trek universe. I couldn't care less about that world anymore.

Sure going back to TOS is a MUCH riskier move than those other ideas, but that's what makes it so damn exciting. I don't know how any fan COULDN'T be excited as hell to see the creator of Lost-- arguably the best scifi show in years-- take on a Star Trek movie.

I've been looking forward to this since I heard of JJ Abrams involvement. The teaser posters suggested to me that the production planned to be faithful to Trek's roots and I have a strong feeling that it will be an entertaining movie, given the people involved. So I'm definitely in the caring about it camp.

I don't care all that much. I was interested in the casting of the Spocks, but every bit of news, every leak, every coy "No comment" from Orci, and even the teaser itself have left me cold. I'm getting the feeling that what JJ sees in Trek--as valid that may be--is not what I see in it. I know teaser != trailer, haven't seen the finished film, yadda yadda yaddda, but going just from what I've seen in the teaser, he's making a big deal about "mankind in space." Tracking in JFK, Neil Armstrong, and NASA countdowns like the aural equivalent of the Enterprise main title graphics. That doesn't do much for me. It's Star Trek; space travel is fairly mundane. Tying it in to real life aerospace endeavors has always felt fake and hollow to me, kind of like saying, "Look how important we are!" If we see so far apart on that point, where else would my inclinations diverge from JJ's?

And the sheer number of Trekkies saying they don't want a movie for Trekkies, but for John Q. Public, is a bit puzzling. Why would you want a Star Trek movie that didn't appeal to you on the level that Star Trek appeals to you? Do you have that little confidence in your own taste? Or do you consider "Star Trek fans" to be a breed apart from yourself, so their opinions can be dismissed?

Personally, I don't want to see a film made solely for "Trekkies" because down that path lies needless self-reference and fan-wankery. As Stan Lee always said "Never give the fans what they think they want."

Trek was originally made for a general audience and should remain so. To make it for "the fans" alone is only going to end in a big Sci-Fi circle jerk and not a god movie.
