Who is the "Federation Captain"?

One word - Archer.

We'd met many other Federation captains during Kirk's tour of duty including Bob Wesley and Matt Decker. Or it could be someone new from a later period of TOS era including Captain Sulu, the unidentified Vulcan captain of the Intrepid; etc. No matter what I do know one thing - We've yet to meet an alien captain from the Federation.

Why is that?

As far as I remember, there were at least three alien captains shown in modern ST, not TOS. They were:

-Bolian Captain Rixx from TNG ep "Conspiracy";
-Unnamed Vulcan Captain of the Saratoga in DSN ep "The Emissary, Pt. 1"; and
-Vulcan Captain Solok, rival of Sisko's from DSN ep "Take Me Out to the Holosuite".

As for who the unnamed Federation Captain is, I also hope it's the "villain" or antagonist in the film. Doubt it will be Captain Pike, but it would be nice.

I don't think the Federation captain is the villain. In the article the villain and the captain are listed as 2 different persons.

Well, in Insurrection the Admiral ends up being Ru'Afo's lap-dog, so the Federation Captain could be an antagonist alongside the main villain.

It's probably Pike but listed on the casting sheet as "Federation Captain" to avoid something spoilerish. If he's revealed to be the villain this early, you immediately get fan outrage to contend with... akin to what was done with Jim Phelps in M:I.

Perhaps it's Captain Mackenzie Calhoun who is in the 24th century with older Spock. This will set up the next TV series (or miniseries) with the USS Excalibur, Calhoun, Shelby, and the rest from the novels, New Frontiers.
