Who is at fault in this auto collision?

I disagree, a 6-second turn signal is pretty good to send a clear indication to all other drivers on what you intend to do.

Sorry to pile on but I think it was your fault, the key for me is in the OP you said if visibility through the traffic was better the accident wouldn't have happened. So, with insufficient visibility, you shouldn't have proceeded into that lane, and once you did you should have yielded to the car with RoW.

A cursory web search shows that the speed limit in MA for unposted "thickly settled" or business areas is 30 mph.

I assume that's on streets, though, not parking lots.

And it seems that visibility was more an issue of the design of the area and not the driver. But, when in doubt, turn right.

I got into an argument with my Driver's Ed teacher in 10th grade over which turn was safer - a left one or a right one- he claimed a left turn was safer, I said it was a right turn since you only need to watch one lane of traffic and it's such a safe turn they let you do it on a red light.

Though arguably, that makes it less-safe, since a significant percentage of accidents involving pedestrians happen when drivers are turning right on a red.

That's why if there are pedestrians, you should treat it as a "no turn on red."

At least where I went to college, that is actually the reason why, in the campus areas, all of the intersections were marked "no turn on red," to keep that from happening. Just to be safe, though, at uncontrolled intersections I used to cut through traffic not in front of the FIRST car (the one waiting to get into the intersection), but behind that car. After all, the next driver isn't about to floor it to peel into the intersection. They've still got their foot on the brake.

You posted a wall of text (twice), a drawing, a map, two pictures from googlemaps, and a funny pic: I don't even need to read your description to know you are in the wrong here.

Lots of unexpert opinion in this thread

Obviously you think you are at fault otherwise you wouldn't have prepared your defence and published it on the internet for strangers with no legal qualifications to appraise.

I hope you have insurance

Less safe for the pedestrian, sure, but for the driver turning right is more safe since you only cross one lane of traffic and the driver should be aware of any pedestrians intending to cross which is why rights-on-red are only legal when the way is clear.

Sorry sir, Dear Wife got into a similar accident in a similar way in a similar parking lot..

Insurance determined it was HER fault..100%! Lucky for us, the car she hit wasn't damaged over $500.00 so we get another year of rate reduction..

Sucks to be you...but accepting the responsibility and moving on is a hallmark of adulthood.

If you were completely alone in the goddamn world with no transportation for an entire long weekend you would have nothing better to do but mull over the events while wallowing in your own depression too. So don't give me your holier-than-thou shit!

Since there's pretty much universal agreement, the OP asked for the topic to be closed (sort of, at least), and things just took an ugly turn, I think it's probably best to close this thread down.
