Sisko is the best captain. Kirk is a great character, and if you were asking about favorite characters, I'd vote for him instead, but I wouldn't want to serve on his crew - he's a loose cannon. Sisko is badass but smart and knows when to hang back and not jump into something feet first.

Agreed! :)

Kirk and Sisko. but I also admit to having a tender spot for Archer. I think he got a bad deal.
I so wanted Archer to be a great leader, an historic figure, a fighter, a pioneer. But Bakula was given crappy lines and scenes and he came across as a poor captain to me. Pity.

There are so many times that I watched TNG and saw Picard (and sometimes Riker, Worf, Data, and Beverly) display real leadership skills that could be applied in real situations. It was thoughly enjoyable to watch those moments: knowing when to be empathetic and understanding, when to make a snap decision or when to seek out the advice of his staff, or when to be demanding and autocratic. Janeway was very good in this regard as well, displaying strong leadership while never losing her femininity, in fact quite the opposite. She was approchable by her crew, something most others weren't. Sisko was a great captain for the Dominion War arc. We the audience got to see his personal side through his relationships his son and even with Dax, but he often had his guard up. Kirk more often just made decisions without consulting his skilled and experienced people.

Hated the show, but I got to go with Janeway. By far the best actor to play the role of captain.

must admit I'd rather serve with sisko as already said he seems to care about the people under his command (and he's a god type person now so he might be able to put a good word in) picard's a very close second though he dose seem to be a bit soft when dealing with other races. i would defiantly not like to serve under kirk it seems if your a red shirt your toast when the security team knows kirks going down i bet they drew straws to see who was unlucky to go down with the captain not too sure about serving janeway never really got into the show as for archer well cant say i cared much for him

Sisko for me. But then, that shouldn't be surprising. Reading down this thread, most people appear to to voting for the captain of their favorite series...which makes sense because they set the tone of the show, don't they?

To me, Sisko is the 'common sense' captain. He is guided mostly by Starfleet regulations...but to him, it's the principles that are the most important - not the letter of the law. Sisko is guided by principles - both his own and Starfleets, more than any other captain. And I like that, because it's how I am.

Picard, to me, is too 'by the book'. In Picard's world, there are alot fewer shades of gray - he's a much more 'the rules are the rules and we're stickin' with 'em no matter what' sort of person. Picard is the least likely of all the captains to ask the question 'What makes SENSE?'. The question he asks all the time, over and over, is 'What is the Starfleet regulation?' In other words, not the most imaginative person on the block....and probably my least favorite of the captains...or at least down at the bottom of the list with Archer.

Kirk is a toughy for me. As a character, I love Kirk - he's brash and he makes his OWN rules (much more than Sisko, who would be second)...and I like that. But I am not a big fan of the womanizing...and so he looses a point or two for that. But otherwise, Kirk rocks.

Janeway is another difficult case. I like Janeway quite a bit...but I must confess that it's mostly because I think the world of Kate Mulgrew - both personally and as an actress. With Janeway, it's not the character or the acting or anything that gets me...it's some of the writing in the later seasons that makes me crazy. One minute she was the most 'by the book' of them all...and the next she is letting off crew members who have committed treason with not even so much as a slap on the wrist. I never got the impression that Janeway the character as portrayed by Kate Mulgrew was nearly as arbitrary as some of the writing in the later seasons made her look. There was nothing arbitrary about the character...and yet some of her actions later on just didn't make sense for the character we got to know in the earlier seasons. Again...the fault of the writing, really.

As for Archer, he was a victim of the writers from day one. Poor guy. I liked Archer's personality...but the writing was so incredibly poor for this character that it's difficult to think of him as a good captain. The writers had Archer looking like a bumbling fool for a major chunk of that show, and it's too bad because it didn't need to be that way. Archer the man seemed to be a principled man (which I liked)...but his command decisions did not reflect those principles. Instead, he wishy-washied his way through the series in what was most certainly the oddest and most 'uncomfortable' portrayal of a Trek captain EVER. Too bad, because he seemed to be quite a likable, 'regular guy' guy.

JLP for me!

The man was a natural born leader--whether arguing for the sake of the whole human race or his android second officer, the man had a powerful sense of right and wrong and acted accordingly. I always admired the character for that. And Patrick Stewart flat out rocked in the role he was born to play. Even when Borgified, he help defeat the cybernetic menace--"sleep, Data, sleep!"

And for the record: he was the only Modern Trek captain to give Kirk a run for his money, and leave Sisko, Janeway, and whatshisname in the dust.

C'mon, I know there are other TNGers in the house here!

poor Scott Bakula. given a short shrift, IMO. he did the best he could with a bad deal. but I love some of his stuff in Season 3 and Season 2. and I think he was excellent in the Mirror eps.

Picard, Sisko and Archer...

Picard was a great diplomat, you knew you shouldn't mess with Sisko (he even punched Q!), and it was fun to watch Archer try to figure out humanity's place in the universe...
