Who had the oddest career path?

JoeZhang

Vice Admiral
Admiral
Chekov (using Canon only appearances)?

Navigator >> Head of security >> First officer >> Second officer(??)/Navigator.

I suppose another could be Geordi La Forge

Helmsman >> Chief Engineer >> Captain*

(*Captain of USS Challenger NCC-71099 in 2390)

Is it ever explained how Geordi becomes chief Engineer? I remember him being Helmsman and then "blam!" he's the boss.

Neelix: He was a merchant > communications master for a Talaxian convoy > cargo ship captain > cook > chief morale officer > unofficial ambassador > babysitter to Naomi Wildman > Starfleet's permanent ambassador in the Delta Quadrant

Neelix doesn't count - only "real" jobs - chief bottlewasher or big mouth isn't a proper job.

<joke!>

Worf. He starts out as a lonely Lieutenant J.G. on the Enterprise, who does odd jobs like being a backup conn officer. When Yar dies, he switches to Security and takes over as Security Chief (picked over the heads of the entire pre-existing staff. Favouritism!)

He sticks around as Security Chief for a while, until a breach of security causes his post to be blown up by antiquated Klingon warships. Ouch. He then moves to DS9, where he goes into the command path, and is given a meaningless bureaucratic job - but also gets to be XO of the Defiant, whose privileges include moping around the Defiant and listening to Klingon Opera really, really loud. During this time he has brief stints onboard the new Enterprise, reprising his old job and pushing around his nominal successor. Favouritism!

Well, eventually he leaves Starfleet to become the Federation Ambassador to Qo'nos. Despite, again, having no formal qualifications - but he did dabble in meddling in Klingon politics, effecting the outcome of Civil Wars, and acting as kingmaker in his off-time (seriously, it's just a hobby.) But I guess that's good enough for the Federation. When we next see him... he's back in Starfleet and is now the Security Chief of the Enterprise, but he's also still in the command division. Favouritism? Weird job autoregression? You tell me.

Worf: Not one stage of his progression makes the slightest bit of sense.

Riker, who turned down not one but three commands, and remained a first officer for nearly 15 years despite stating that his ultimate goal was to command a ship of his own. In a real organization, this would amount to career seppuku.

How about Chapel? From nurse to M.D. in what was supposed to be 18 months? Then the last time we see her in STIV, she's working some computer in Starfleet Command.

I always had the impression from the dialog in "What Little Girls Are Made Of" that Chapel was a researcher who signed up for Starfleet as a nurse in hopes of finding the missing Roger Korby. Perhaps with that background, she had already completed must of her doctorial program and was just shy of an medical degree. After the FYM, she just returned and finished it or earned the remaining credits while serving aboard the Enterprise.

^ I like that notion. I never really saw her that way. That really adds to the understanding of her character.

Kira. From terrorist to Bajoran militia major to Starfleet commander.
And if you read the books, you can add Bajoran Militia Colonel commanding a Federation Starbase>Starfleet Captain who commands said base and (I think) it's starship.

I don't think there can be a bigger change in specialty than the Sisko. Engineer to first officer, then shipbuilder, then captain of DS9, then strategic planning officer of some sort during the Dominion War, back again to captain of both DS9 and Defiant, then prophet. Although I'm not sure what duties are commensurate with a prophethood.

enigmatic rambling prophecies open to at least 3 different interpertations.

Worf's only filling in as SecChief for what was nominally a milk-run mission to Betazed, before they got side-tracked into all that Romulan shite. According to the novels, he resigned as Ambassador after the new President was elected and turned down being reappointed, returning to Starfleet and was offered the Titan XO job over Riker's head but after Data's death in NEM, he remained on the E-E and is now First Officer.

and i know you're comments about his ambassadorship are intended as humourous, but a lot of US Ambassadors are political appoiintees, often with now prior experience of actual diplomatic work, particularly to an allied/friendly nation like Australia, the UK etc. The real work's done by the Chief of Mission or Deputy Chiefs of Mission and so on.

Still, wouldn't that mean she went from recent medical grad to CMO on a federation starship (before McCoy came back) in a very short time.

Just out of curiousity, in what book(s) do these things take place in?

captcalhoun, I suspected there might be novelistic explanations, but as far as the canon is concerned, it's still pretty ridiculous. (Actually, it doesn't sound a whole lot probable even taking the books into view - why was he temporarily taking over, especially when he's still an Ambassador?)

Since Worf was wearing command red in Nemesis I'd say he was only the acting head of security and it was just a temporary assignment. Otherwise he's be in the gold of security.
