Who Did The Best Acting Job in NuTrek?

TRON JA307020

Vice Admiral
Admiral
In either ST or STID. My top pick of course would be Leonard Nimoy playing Spock. I especially liked the last scene he did. Classic Spock attitude about not telling his alternate universe young spock "live long and prosper" because it would be "self serving". My second pick would be Karl Urban playing McCoy. He actually played the character the way McCoy should be played without doing a parody. Urban was the only version of the NuTrek crew I liked.

Urban as McCoy, Pine as Kirk and Pegg as Scotty.

I'm not a big Zoe Saldana fan, especially turning Uhura into a whiny brat.

Karl Urban playing McCoy or Bruce Greenwood as Christopher Pike.

Agreed and agreed.

I'll give props to Quinto and Pine, though. However, neither Eric Bana nor Benedict Cumberbatch did it for me. And I wish Peter Weller's character had more motivation in order for me to judge.

''I totally agree about Saldana. She is nothing like Uhura should be. When NuUhura compained to NuSPock about not getting the Enterprise that was something Uhura would never have done.

Yeah Cumberpatch as Khan didn't work for me either. He played him as a sensitive type instead of a dictator. I mean he cried in the brig and let NuKirk and NuSpock see his tear. Khan is a dictator for petes sake.He should have played the character that way.

I give Saldana a pass because I think she's hot. I think they're just trying to make Uhura more than just someone who sits quietly in the corner until spoken to. She's certainly not a boring character.

Chris Pine as Kirk.

His version of Kirk starts off as a new character but has been slowly turning into the Kirk as portrayed by William Shatner. My favorite scene with him is in the Brig where he speaks with Khan one on one.

Kirk: "Let me explain what's happening here. YOU are a CRIMINAL...I watched you murder innocent men and women. I was authorized to END YOU! And the ONLY reason why you are STILL alive is because I'm ALLOWING it! So, SHUT. YOUR. MOUTH!"

He was channeling Shatner in that scene.

I generally like the new cast, but Urban as McCoy is uncanny.

Meanwhile, I can't help noticing that this thread is already devolving into "who do you don't like," even though the OP asked for the "Best" instead of the "Worst."

Yeah that does seem to be happening. I would like to know whos acting they liked the best. If they want to say they didn't like someone fine but say who you like the most first.

Unless Danny's justification for the criticism of her being "whiny" is the cadence of her voice or the manner in which she delivered her lines, it sounds like both of your complaints are about the writing rather than Saldana's acting.

In regards to your comment, I think it's true that TOS Uhura probably would not have made that complaint, but that's largely due to the sexism of the era preventing her from being allowed to have the same sense of agency that Saldana's Uhura had, and she would not have stood up for herself to a superior officer in the same manner. Rather than being whiny, I think it's a good thing that nUhura was assertive and went after what she wanted, which I think is perfectly in keeping with the Uhura of the movie era, and especially STIII.

As far as the best acting in nuTrek, I think the acting overall was incredibly well done across the board. I can't really name anyone in the main casts that did a poor job acting (IMO), nor do I consider their merits to be solely based on how closely they mimicked the mannerisms and behavior of their TOS counterparts. That being said, if I had to choose a few favorites from the cast, if would have to be the aforementioned Bruce Greenwood, Karl Urban, and Zachary Quinto.

Also I agree Urbans McCoy is really good. Urban looks a lot like Deforest a few years younger and he really understands the character. I wish they would give him a larger role in the movies like McCoy got in the series. I may like the NuTrek films a bit more if they did that.

No criticism of Nimoy at all, but I'm not going to count him as I'm more inclined to think of 'nuTrek' as being the new ensemble, not the old guys. Nimoy's performance was great but he isn't 'nuTrek'.

I think Pine is amazing (he's managed to convince me 100% that he's Captain Kirk without for a minute simply caricaturing Shatner's performance), Pegg grew on me in the second movie, and Bruce Greenwood was terrific as Captain Pike (a character I've always been fascinated by, so I *really* appreciated the chance to see a little bit more of him). But the break-out winner for me is Zoe Saldana, who absolutely owns nuTrek IMO. And it's about time Uhura got her time in the sun and Zaldana has hit it out of the park. :techman:

I'm less enamoured with Quinto, although I don't think nuSpock has been well-served by scenes like the Khaaaaaan one in StiD; nor of Karl Urban whose McCoy seems too bitter and grumpy for my liking (one thing everybody seems to forget about DeForest Kelley was the glint in his eye and the smile that always seemed to play on his lips -- his McCoy was a very humourous character at times, and had a charm that IMHO Urban has, so far at least, completely failed to project in any comparible measure. His McCoy always seems so serious.)

But on the whole, it's a great ensemble. :)

in trek 2009 aside of Nimoy who is always a 10 in the spock role. I will say Zachary Quinto did the best job in terms of acting.

in trek 2016, I would say chris pine did the best acting.

urban, greenwood, zoe, and cho both do good jobs in the role but McCoy is just too angst in the film.

I am not sure of pegg's acting as he is the comic relief.

Ultimately I have to vote for Chris Pine. Karl Urban channelled Kelley almost flawlessly, Quinto delivered Spock quite creditably within the parameters he was given, Greenwood brought a perfect elder-statesman warmth and humanity to Pike, and Saldana reinvented Uhura quite brilliantly. But Pine had to do by far the most demanding balancing act -- convincingly delivering something that would be recognizable as an alternate version of Shatner's Kirk without just imitating Shatner -- and he pulled it off with astonishing aplomb.

I think by and large most of the new cast have done great jobs, and it's one of the strongest aspects of these new movies for me, as they could have easily have got it so very wrong. Pine, Quinto and Urban have done as good a job as I could have realistically hoped for - they've all been very good. Criticism of say Quinto's Spock is more down to the material over his performance in my opinion.

I've enjoyed Greenwood's performances very much in the two films also, he was a great choice for the role of Pike and lent the movies some much needed gravitas. He's always solid and reliable in everything I've seen him in and will be missed in ST3. I'm hoping to see a more mature Kirk & Spock in this movie to fill the hole he's left.

In ST'09, the only two characters I didn't care for were Scotty and Chekov, the former because the writers were trying to overdo it with the comedy aspect, when Doohan's Scotty wasn't intentionally trying to be a comical character. And I also think the writers confused Chekov and Wesley Crusher, as Koenig's character was never a "boy genius," only an overzealous young officer with a penchant for spouting "Russia" this and "Russia" that.

However, I think Scotty in STID was a marked improvement. And you know what? I understand now that this Chekov is actually not even the same person biologically as TOS Chekov, having been born after the temporal incursion and on a different date. So if Pavel Chekov is now a whiz kid, then that's fine :)

Chris Pine is a stand out character and Chekov was most improved. Tptb really put a lot of thought into the new group dynamic...it's all a good fit for me anyway.
