To be honest, I'm not sure why Urban gets the bulk of the praise. The other actors made the characters their own, but to me Urban is simply doing an impersonation.

to those who want everything to be like tos, it's a quality
to those who recognize this as a reboot, and acknowledge the necessity of seeing a new interpretation of the characters rather than an impersonation, this can be a big flaw.

I stand by the opinion that the main reason why it feels like there isn't enough McCoy in the movies IS precisely the fact that he hadn't found his place in this story, unlike the other characters who have new dynamics and layers to show.
There isn't really something, anything, that differentiates this McCoy from the other.. beside the fact that you see more of his friendship with Kirk. Nothing really suggesting that this is the McCoy from another reality who might be the same and yet different from the other for some reason. We know, in some way, what went differently for Kirk, Spock and even Uhura (she's an actual linguist with thing for alien languages, for example, unlike tos Uhura was was mostly a radio operator) but not McCoy.
