Who could play an American Doctor?

Daniel Gillies would be a good idea. Best thing is he puts on an outstanding British accent on "The Originals" and "The Vampire Diaries" thus would work in either Doctor Who US or UK. Beats Capaldi anyway. ;)

Can I point out that Terry Nation was British, but not English. Like Russell T, he was Welsh...
For a series which is sometimes said to be quintessentially English, Doctor Who had very few English people in its initial set-up team. And most of those were not establishment types (Dennis Spooner, Cockney who'd left school at 14, Verity Lambert was jewish so at a guess her parents might have come to Britain after some pogrom or Krystallnacht.... etc). Which is sort of right for a very English alien...

I can't see how you can say 'beats Capaldi' when you haven't seen him play the Doctor and have only seen 30 seconds or so of the latter. You have no idea how the new Doctor is going to be written, for one thing.

You are confusing the subjective 'I would rather see someone else than peter Capaldi play the 12th Doctor' with the objective 'X is a better Doctor than Capaldi.' Why not actually, you know, wait and see what way the character is written and how PC plays him before casting judgement?

*Morgan Freeman (who was rumored at some point?)
*Don Cheadle
*Edward James Olmos
*Josh Brolin

I'm American and still would prefer to always have a Doctor from the UK! He just...wouldn't be the same!

Nah...I mean, as long as he was upbeat and fast-paced enough to be the Doctor, it's okay. However I'm intrigued by the Paul Giamatti idea. I think that could work in a weird way!!! But still the humor is slightly different so not sure how well it would mesh with the writing and all of the other actors and characters being British/Scottish etc.

But if I had to pick one... I would have to think about it.

I think eventually the Doctor should be played by a redhead actor because of his aforementioned ginger comments. :p
