Who could play an American Doctor?

Although... this is a rather obvious and fanboyish suggestion, but if you're going for an eccentric, unpredictable, often comic protagonist with great intelligence but a boyish and petulant streak, that's something Nathan Fillion has done well on Castle.

I'm sure his fellow Canadians would agree. ;)

Robert Downey Jr. I thought his Sherlock Holmes portrayal was somewhat Doctor-like.

That's because the Doctor is Sherlock Holmes-like. ;) I daresay Holmes has always been a major influence on the Doctor: An eccentric, flamboyant genius who solves problems no one else can solve, and who associates with a more ordinary companion as his partner in adventure. Tom Baker has actually played Holmes, and Peter Cushing played both Holmes and the "Dr. Who" character in the feature films based on the first two Dalek adventures. (And Nicholas Briggs has played both characters in audios.)

Samuel L. Jackson:

"Gallifreyan, motherf*cker! Do you SPEAK it?!?!?"

"I've had it with these motherf*cking Daleks on the motherf*cking plane!"

Michael Emerson could be great as more devious/dangerous Doctor.

I really like the Alan Tudyk suggestion too. I haven't seen him on Justified, but, I loved him as Alpha on Dollhouse

Picardo and Hewlett could be pretty fun too.

Going with a female, I've always thought Parker Posey could play a really fun Female Doctor

I'm a little biased but

If you want a Female doctor, than Tatiana Maslany. She's proved she can play anything, and I want to see her in more stuff. ;)

The Maslany suggestion got me thinking: Matt Frewer as the Doctor might be cool, if you're looking for a zany madcap Doctor.

I think Michael Emerson would be better cast as the Master.

Hmm, you're probably thinking of him from Lost, but I know him from Person of Interest, where his character is pretty much the most noble and morally centered human being on the show and has a way of taking damaged, violent, ruthless people under his wing and inspiring them to become something better. He's already a Doctor-like figure in a lot of ways, although much more soft-spoken and introverted than most Doctors. But he's also got a secretive, Machiavellian side like the Seventh Doctor.

If The Doctor were to ever be American (which I hope never happens; he is intrinsically British)

Yup, an intrinsically British series co-created by a Canadian, which had its theme music and its pilot written by Australians and whose first director was from India. ;)

Well to be fair he was referring to the Character and not the show and besides even the Docotr has refered to himself British sort of in The TV Movie (well more accuratly Grace does, to which he agrees).

And the second serial "The Daleks" by British writer Terry nation that also set the tone.

Besides we welcome the contributions of the Commonwealth Nations in the creation of DW.

I was mainly just teasing, but I have heard the "Doctor Who must be English" sentiment taken too far. A few months back I saw a post from someone insisting that Peter Capaldi shouldn't use his natural Scottish accent as the Doctor because the Doctor needs to be English rather than Scottish. I guess that person had never seen a Sylvester McCoy episode.

(emphasis mine)

Thanks for the backup, but..... "he?"

My apologies

And of course Capaldi will be the third Scot to have potrayed the Doctor, and I don't think I've ever seen DW must be English, British certainly but not English.

But some might argue that it's British traits are part of the shows charm.
