Who cleans the Enterprise?

swabbie_2_by_peetcooper-d5vweni.jpg

Haven't you noticed the cleaning personel on screen?

That might be an android.

No one ever cleans. Everything is automated. When was the last time you fetched water from the town well or made candles for light? Though I imagine there's some of that at the Academy and periodically scheduled to keep them grounded. If GoogleMaps goes out, you should be comfortable enough with paper map, if you're in the life-saving business.

I suppose the life support system can also be used to spray some cleaning fluid or disinfectant on the important surfaces, then if any of the upholstery gets too badly worn they can send Crewman Nobody over to remove it and recycle it back into the replicator.

Aside from active nano-clouds there should also be passive systems such as self-cleaning nano-materials:

I think that would have been a better role for Wesley to play on the bridge. While the grown ups solve problems he could be in the background cleaning consoles and feeling sorry for himself ;-)

But I just assumed the bridge staff were neurotically clean people. Then again, the servers kind of clean in Ten Forward (I seem to remember) but only in that "Cheers" polishing random bottles way.

It may suprise you but there are people out who love cleaning up and keep things tidy. But i would imagine the tech to be so advanced that the ship is swept with a cleaning beam!

I was under the impression she cleaned herself. I can't remember the episode this was mentioned but I recall the line. If I were to hazard a guess I'd say "Up The Long Ladder"

It was that episode. Riker says that to the lovely Irish lass he later bones.

He boned a lot of women.

Well regardless of whoever or whatever cleans the ship, I doubt it's very hard. As long as the ship was spotless clean when it leaves the dock, their wouldn't be alot of new dirt or dust. It's completely sealed no new dust or dirt gets in. As long as your making sure people are clean when they get out of the shuttle bay or transporter room, not a whole lot of dirt or dust should be introduced. That is of course aside from bathrooms or the mess hall. And I can imagine in the mess hall if you have the tech to make food just materialize, you have the tech to deal with crumbs. Although it would be a very interesting choice to see a main story character in the new upcoming show be someone who has more menial tasks such as scrubbing the washroom. Especially if they were close to the captain. Have the head honcho going to the janitor for advice. Either way, vacuum sealed means easy to clean.

Most dust is discarded skin.
That's a common myth but it isn't really true. The majority of household dust is soil particles and brick and plaster dust, both of which should be fairly minimal on a spaceship. Certainly it was said on screen the ship cleaned itself, which is an upgrade on the Movie era; Nicholas Meyer put at least two background players in shot mopping the floor.

Several times we see either Guinan or her waiters clearing tables and carry things away. So apparently TenForward doesn't clean itself.

It could be the self-cleaning process is one or both of the following:

1. Done when rooms or sections are empty of human life (incase it's invassive to humanoids and escaped pets).

2. Slow and gradule -- it doesn't occur very quickly. Which would not only account for why we never see the self-cleaning ship actually clean itself and why Guinan whips down tables; she's not waiting for it to handle itself.

In VOY Zimmerman states something along the lines that the EMH mark 1 was decommissioned and was cleaning salvage ships or something (can't remember) so I would have to assume that some less advanced photonic being is doing the dirty work on the enterprise

That was by far the worst plot tangent of the EMH; because one hologram is sentient, all holograms are sentient? And since you can upgrade the EMH, why would you "reuse" a medical program to mine ore?
It's like saying that once you upgrade the HHS Medical Exchange website, you can reuse the old website to control garbage trucks. It just doesn't make sense.
