Who Are Your Favorite Animated Characters And Why?

My Favorites include:

Kyon (The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzimiya)
Rebecca aka Revy (Black Lagoon)
Mr. Chang (Black Lagoon)
Clare (Claymore)
Kirika Yumera (Noir)
Ah yes, good old Batosai: The Manslayer, aka Kenshin Himura. Oddly enough I was just rewatching random bits of the Kyoto Arc of Rurouni Kenshin yesterday.
I'm afraid I have no idea who all of them are. :( I'm just honest, I never really got into animes. Which one would you recommend to convince me?

Also, albeit for very different reasons, Anton Ego from Ratatouille. Such a deliciously dark critic, with a superb vocal performance by Peter O'Toole.
Yeah, that was a hilarious character.

*Obelix. Do I need to explain this one?
I only liked Idefix. ;)

Hm. I'm surprised nobody's mentioned him, and I'm also surprised at myself for not mentioning him:

Zapp Brannigan, from Futurama. Absolutely hilarious and thinly veiled parody of Captain Kirk and William Shatner.
Well, technically, I did. ;)

Well, yeah, yeah, technically; but Zapp Brannigan deserves his fifteen minutes of infamy.

Hm. I had to look that one up. He's known as Dogmatix in English.

Oh, also: Heresy! :p

Well, technically, Brannigan is only a "guest" or secondary character and isn't exactly part of the Futurama cast. :p (Or is my definition of "cast" off?)

Oops, I didn't realize they had different names in the UK.

Oh, and: It's only the truth! :p

I'd count him as part of the cast along with Kif and Nibbler, although I'll admit the supporting cast does tend to blur with the regular cast a bit: Mom, her sons, Scruffy, Calculon, Morbo, Linda, Lrrr, Ndnd, Elzar, Nixon...well you get the point.

Well, naturally, I've always liked my namesake. It's hard to argue with a Transformer who turns into a planet. :D

One of the most deeply complex protagonists ever ... animated or otherwise.

Ditto but wasn't Rurouni kenshin a manga series before it became an anime?

My favorite of all time is the Red Comet Char Aznable.

Ed from Cowboy Bebop gets a honorable mention.

Hank Hill....what, you were expecting me to say something else. He's a simple kind of guy, not complicated or flashy.

Bobby Hill, the kid just has so much potential and big dreams.

Bugs Bunny, no one gets one over on him.

My Favorites include...

Some good choices; I'd agree with most of those.

I'll add Aramaki from Ghost in the Shell. It's rare to see someone of advancing years portrayed as such an intelligent, capable, and just plain cool character. Also his outrageous hair style rocks and I hope to emulate it when I'm that age.

Edit: see av for pic. Also, agree with with kalysto below about Motoko; decided to go with the badass old guy for originality. Actually Batou's pretty cool as well. Hell, Ghost in the Shell is just overflowing with kickassness, coolness, and badassery.

Some of my all-time favourite characters are toons!

Zuko (Avatar) and Mugen (Samurai Champloo) I guess are your typical brooding boys on a path of redemption. I'm female and while I thought my only affinity with these two was I enjoyed the journeys they took, I realised I probably am kinda similar. Very short fuse, like to be in control and quite competitive.

All balances out in the end though, because when I'm not feeling so aggravated, I'm probably more like Stimpy (Ren and Stimpy) or Fry (Futurama).

Of course, one of the greatest anime characters ever, Motoko Kusunagi (Ghost in the Shell) cannot be forgotten. Kick ass lady.

<------- I think it's pretty obvious who my favorite is. Yes, I like a lot Disney characters, and characters like Bender and Stimpy, too. But I adore Bloo from Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends.

He's blue, first of all, and that is my favorite color. If I had my way, every thing in the house would be blue. He's also a simple drawing, and simple is good. He's a bit like my alter-ego. He's childish, demanding, greedy and is frequently carried away by his wild imagination. He's not above whining to get his way. But he's also funny, loyal and insecure. I love Bloo. He's a great character.

Eric Cartman (South Park) - the words that come out of this kid's mouth are so inappropriate and I love it

Timmy (South Park) - I know it's wrong but I'm so amused by the wheelchair-bound special-needs kid whose only dialogue is to shout his name

Master Shake (Aqua Teen Hunger Force) - he's such a jackass and I love it

The Plutonians, Emory and Oglethorpe (Aqua Teen Hunger Force) - why do aliens from Pluto look like spiky cactus plants? And why does one have a German accent? Who cares - their incompetence amuses me!

Stewie Griffin (Family Guy) - one of the most bizarre, complicated and confusing animated characters I've ever encountered. I think that's why I like him.

The Penguins (Madagascar) - the only saving grace to an otherwise-forgettable film

I want to try and stay true to the OP's desire. Does Optimus Prime count? He is my choice hands down if so.
I know he was a toy, whereas PeterParker[via the comic] was given "life" prior, but he had no "life" or personality until he was a cartoon.

It depends really, as animation is really a HUGE medium in Japan. There's science fiction, fantasy, comedy, horror, action, drama/slice of life, sports, romance, etc. What's you're favorite genre of fiction?

As for my personal opinions:
1. Monster: (Drama, Mystery,Horror) It follows a skilled Japanese neurosurgeon named Kenzo Tenma working in Germany who, after being fed up with his boss playing hospital politics, saves the life of a more critical patient (a boy shot in the head) and as a result loses his upcomming promotion and his fiance. Later on, his boss and coworkers are killed which has the effect of making Tenma the hospital director and also making him the prime suspect. Framed for crimes he hasn't committed he becomes a fugitive in order to find the real killer, chased by a workaholic German BKA agent, a hired killer, and his crazy ex-fiance. Not available commercially in the US and quite long at 74 episodes but highly worth watching.

2. Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex: (Science Fiction, Crime Drama) In a unique future world where the lines of man and machine are no longer as clearly defined, a covert branch of the Japanese government called Section 9 deals with cybercrimes, terrorists, and other crimes related to cyborgs and androids. The team consists of cyborgs all with their own strengths and skills. Runs 52 episodes and has been fully released. This series has been aired on Cartoon Network and might still be or come back sometime since it got good ratings.

3. Planetes: (Science Fiction, Drama, Comedy, Romance) In the not so distant future space travel between our little part of the solar system has increased. This has the added effect of of making Earth's orbit filled with random space junk from launches which pose a very real danger to incomming and outgoing flights. The debris section dubbed "half section" consists of a team of Space EVA workers that collect, recycle, or destroy the debris. It's probabally the best and most believable hard sci-fi show that I've seen. It actually pays attention to things like physics. 26 episode series available for a very decent price.

4. Haibane Renmei: (Drama, Mystery) Confused and without many prior memories a girl emerges from a strange cocoon into an unfamiliar walled city to which she is not allowed to leave. Her only memories of who she might be are pieces of a dream of falling from the sky. Because of this she is given the name Rakka which means "Falling" and soon short angelic wings sprout painfully from her back. She learns from the girls like herself that take her in that she is a Haibane or "charcoal feather". Rakka attempts to adjust to her new strange lifestyle, the city's strange laws, and solve the mystery of the town's purpose, and how she got there. Short and sweet at only 13 episodes. The company that put it out, Geneon, died last year though so finding DVDs could be difficult.

5. Black Lagoon: (Action) Rokuro Okajima is an ordinary Japanese Bussinessman fed up with the crappy way he gets treated. However, he finally get a chance and is charged with delivering a disc which is where his troubles really begin. First his boat is hijacked by modern pirates, calling themselves Lagoon Company who were paid to recover the disc which their employer plans to use to blackmail his company because it contains info on their illegal dealings. Unfortunately for "Rock", as his captors have hanceforth dubbed him, his company refuses to pay his ransom and sends mercenaries to kill him and the pirates. Left with nothing but the clothes on his back and far from home Rock decides to join Lagoon Company and become a criminal. Runs a total of two 12 episode series for a total of 24. Another victim of Geneon's colapse so the DVDs would be rare. It airs on Starz Edge though if you get premium channels.

Dale Gribble from King of the Hill. His committment to his paranoia alternately amuses and impresses me. He's great!
