Whither Stargate?

No, its not--this is the internet;)

I vote for Channing Tatem and Jonah Hill to star alongside Emma Watson.

I'm imagining Channing Tatum as Jack O'Neil and Jonah Hill as Daniel Jackson, and it strangely works. But if Emma Watson is Teal'c, who's Carter? And is it Samantha or Samuel Carter?

I was half-serious proposing them. After 22 JS, I can see studios looking at them as a potentially classic comedy/action duo.

Let's start a petition!

Comedy/action? I nominate Martin Riggs as Jack O'Neill, Leo Getz as Daniel Jackson, Roger Murtaugh as Teal'c, and Lorna Cole as Samantha Carter.

It is pretty stunning that a franchise that seemed fairly strong just a few years ago has all but died out. Typically today, anything faintly smelling of success is quickly remade or rebooted to try and keep that success going but the Stargate thing really has died on the vine. I'm sure it will come back someday, though.

Well, it didn't just die out--it happened over three or four years. But it did have a pretty good run on television, in fact it was a big success.

Plus, MGM's bankruptcy no doubt played a role in nothing being done with it. Now that the studio is on it's feet, they moving ahead to....open the gate. :techman:

What do you want us to talk about? I think speculation on a plot or cast or director is entirely premature. Anything is just speculation.

Dirk Benedict should play Sam Carter.

DAX: Benjamin, I've got a neutrino surge from the wormhole - it's opening.

SISKO: Onscreen.

THE OPS VIEWSCREEN BLINKS ON. FOUR HUMAN BODIES TUMBLE OUT, OBVIOUSLY ASPHYXIATING AND CLAWING FOR ATMOSPHERE THAT ISN'T THERE. THE SPASMS QUICKLY SUBSIDE.

SISKO: Well, ain't that a thing.

I'd like to see a SG-1 continuation that also involves Otherworld.

Oh yeah, I went there.
And I followed, and loved it...
...the SG-1 wormholes opens into DS-9. Hilarity ensues.
...but I also love this.

Say, everyone: Are we certain that the movie IS a reboot, and NOT a motion picture continuation of the TV shows like was done for a certain other franchise that seems popular 'round here? ;)

Roland Emmerich and Dean Devlin hated the TV series and had nothing to do with it, the movie reboot is their idea and it is reboot of the original movie.

I still think this will be like Ghostbusters 3, talked about for decades but as more people involved die the less likely anything decent will get made.

I'm actually kind of interested in this. To me, Stargate has always presented a great concept with a lot of untapped potential.

Like Possum said, The film, while entertaining at the time, is, in retrospect, basically the preamble definition of the series.

And the series itself was never quite what it could have been. The first third was excellent, no doubt. But only if you can get passes the immense block of cheese. The middle third is a mixed bag of mediocrity. And the final third is bloody awful.

And I find Atlantis and SGU unwatchable.

I think it ultimately boils down to how much of it do they reconstruct. If they go ahead and try to reuse the characters and the pyramids with their alien pharaohs (Goa'uld or otherwise.), it's destined to fail.

But if they strip everything away to it just being an ancient alien devise that creates a wormhole that sends you instantly anywhere in the universe and start from scratch, it could be good.

They could play baseball together!
Or fish!

While I don't exactly agree with your critical view of the series, especially the last one, I do concur with the concept of how a more engaging and less tiresome continuing act should be planned. There is just too much discord inherent in falling back to the original characters.

Even though years have gone by since the last iteration was produced, the patina that was carved out and burnished for them (Jackson and O'Neill) for so long will likely remain far too strong into the forseeable future to allow their re-introduction to lead to anything other than endless internecine squabbling and backbiting from the various camps. Not that there won't be bellyaching to a significant degree regardless.

As you say, best to artfully employ the same conceit, but with an entirely new scenario, generating a new excitement and acceptance that perhaps can carry through the entire triptych and maybe, even beyond. :techman:
