'White genocide in space': Racist "fans" seething at racial diversity in Discovery...

And how ironic that is...

DS9 has so many episodes that would anger a lot of the folks who believe in BS like "white genocide". The one where Nog forms a Union and strikes with the workers of Quark's bar, the several ones where Kira's actions in the Bajoran War were justified, that one where Sisko says he hates 60s Vegas because of the racism that dominated the period... Not to mention Ferengis like Quark and the Grand Nagus that act like a parody of people who hate the Welfare State.

Or "Far beyond the stars" a show that was all about the problems that black and women science fiction writers dealt with in the 40s and 50s.

If aired today, DS9 would receive a lot of hate from the reactionary crowd. God, I hope Discovery manages to bother these people even more. :guffaw:

The very fact that the lead character is a black captain by itself would turn the racists off DS9. There's just no way someone with that warped kind of mentality could stomach a black man being in a position of authority and commanding so much screen time. Plus the female characters of Kira and Dax winning all those one on one fights with males? Please. They wouldn't have lasted past the pilot.

Yeah, this is really sad that Star Trek fans would behave in this manner :cardie:
Just because Star Trek is generally progressive doesn't mean that all Star Trek fans are. Quite a few think that the more "enlightened" aspects of Trek are total b.s. and like it for other reasons.

Trek may be 24th-Century, but it's watched by a 21st-Century audience. We're not all on the same page...yet.

Reactionaries can't face the truth that even today Women and oppressed Ethnic Groups have a lot of trouble getting into the Writing Industry... Imagine then something that they can't refute using shallow arguments and conspiracy theories, like the fact that people in the 1940s were Racist as hell.

It would feed even more into their "White Genocide" conspiracy theories... They think White people not being the only ones in positions of command is "literally the death of the Western Civilization".

Oooooh... Well remembered! Kira and Dax would probably be the most hated characters by the PUAs types... They were Female characters that owned their decisions about the people that they had (or not) relationships with. Despite the pressure of some Male characters, they never gave in. I can imagine the 3 hour long rants about the "Evils of Feminism in Star Trek" by folks like Sargon of Akkad :barf:

I also remembered something else: In the Union episode, Nog literally quotes Marx. That would make them believe ST is part of the "Big Cultural Marxist Conspiracy" even more...

Sometimes I feel happy DS9 is an older show and relatively one of the most "forgotten" Series of ST. Toxic Fandoms like those of our times, sometimes even spoil stuff for me. That's why I feel happy TrekBBS still is around.

You mean to say you never have had your mind or opinion changed when presented with facts or appealed to on the basis of compassion or emotion? You have never engaged in a discussion or series of discussions and come away with a different point of view than before the discussion?

Are you saying it is impossible to win hearts and influence minds?
As I said earlier, I accidentally left out a word. I meant bigots will never change their mind.

This. But, there is always hope.

My favorite line from the article: "And those people who hate Discovery for its inclusivity are too small-minded to realize what they hate is what Star Trek stands for."

How far we are from those ideals...

That episode was a big eye opener to me when I first saw it. I didn't know that writers used their initials to hide their gender. Then I remembered D.C. Fontana, who started as Gene Rodenberry's secretary and eventually went on to a career in science fiction. Even in the 60s she was using her initials instead of her full name. I always thought it was because it was a cool sounding name.

They forget that America has always been a big melting pot and unfortunately through history new arrivals have ALWAYS faced persecution whether it was Italians, Irish or African Americans.

Agreed. Maybe these idiots only saw the women in TOS as sex objects because they were always parading around in very short miniskirts and standards of the time didn't allow them much to do. But by TNG women were branching into more important roles and by VOYAGER were really the more interesting characters.

They should have figured that out once Picard declared "money doesn't exist."

Me too. Now if only an investor can come along and help give the show the remaster it properly deserves.

Not sure I'm interested in building bridges to folks who devalue human life based on skin color or sexual orientation.

I should also add gender to the list. I posted a bit quickly the last time and left off an important element.

Yeah I would add to the list religious and belief system intolerance.

No (unless we're talking about Islam and other beliefs). The US is 76% Christian according to the last Gallup polls (and they're pretty consistent). The "intolerance" is something made up by conservative talk show hosts to stir the pot and get Christians to vote.

Let me guess, clickbait journalists found a handful of anonymous racists who spend all day trolling on Twitter and decided to make them famous.
That may be so, but these "anonymous trolls" who you're referring to don't exist in a vacuum.

One of the things that makes me sad is that there are enough people in the US to decisively influence national policy who agree with some or all of the bigotry expressed in these videos, not to mention people with such sympathies around the world with influence elsewhere. There may be only a small minority motivated to make these videos, but how many people nod their heads in agreement upon listening to the hate speech in them?

If the argument is that the clickbait journalists are doing a disservice by giving the anonymous racists free exposure, then we still have a problem if the social landscape is receptive to that racism (and sexism).
