Whiskey Drinking

Dryson

I recently set out on a whiskey, rum and vodka adventure this year. I have returned with a one of a kind whiskey I call Black Oak that was aged with certified white oak that is between 4,000 to 6,000 years old. It is in the barrel being tamed at the moment.

Interesting that such a small piece of white oak could hold much character taste. Just imagine drinking a whiskey that has a taste of 4,000 years old.

What is your favorite type of whiskey, rum, vodka or wine?

I don't like whiskey, rum or vodka.

Wine? No preference. Cheap wine, fine wine, whatever. I don't care. If I'm out to dinner with my parents and they order wine, I'll drink whatever they're drinking.

(I know absolutely jackshit about wine, other than the fact that whoever invented pretentious wine talk should be executed without trial.)

Beer? Ideally, Redd's Apple Ale

I am also very fond of gin & tonic. That's what I usually drink when I'm travelling. In the United Club, drinks are free! :ouch:

Used to really enjoy famous grouse. I've not touched spirits for about 12 years now and I've hit the point where even the smell repels me.

I had a bottle of innis and gunn bourbon ale the other day, and it was very, very nice.

For a fine whisky, I'd take a 25 year old Ancnoc, or an Abelour Abunad'h.. Highland Park, etc etc etc, too many to name.

Whiskey, a Green Spot would do nice.

Bourbon, a Woodford Reserve or Blanton's Gold.

Rum, Eldorado 25 year old, very delicious.

Cognac, a 20year old Prunier or Martel XO would do fine.

Armagnac, Tariquet Bas armagnac 15 year old

Jenever, Zuidam 5 year old bourbon barrel

Korenwijn, Bols 6 year old or the 5 year old Zuidam.

I also enjoy a nice Grappa or eau de vie now and then or a nice brandy..

Aye, the pirate likes his booze:biggrin:

I don't drink alcohol. Frankly, I can't stand the stuff. Wine, beer, distilled spirits -- it all tastes like panther piss.

(Okay, so I don't know what panther piss tastes like. But I figure it tastes pretty much like ordinary house cat piss.)

The word Whiskey is mainly used for Irish and US variants, in Scotland they usually use Whisky for their spirits.

Personally, I stopped drinking spirits well over 10 years ago. I used to really like Famous Grouse and Southern Comfort. I stopped vodka way before that after realising that me and Vodka get on fine, but me, vodka and other people don't. Gin and coke on a hot day is utterly unbeatable... Used to find it really easy to smuggle into work as well, but that's another story :censored:

I've pretty much stopped all alcohol now, but I had a bottle of Innis and Gunn Dark Bourbon Ale the other night, very, very nice, you can certainly taste the Bourbon in it. It was on reduced to clear in Sainsbury's. Nice as a treat, but I can see an evening on it ending really badly.

I don't tend to drink much (usually the designated driver so it's almost never).

When I do, it's usually Vodka. Rum is also an occasional one.

I sample it, I use a small snifter glass and enjoy the taste, its a fine bottle will last months that way, I do like a good Port as well, Warre's Otima is very, Kopke also has some really nice old tawny's, also Niepoort's senior tawny is very nice, Madeira I like quite a lot as well but the really nice stuff is hard to find in my place.

I am not a Whisk(e)y drinker.

Sure, I do have a bottle of 'secret ingredient' for when I'm cooking beans (Smokehead), a bottle of Rye (Jim Beam) for certain cocktails and a bottle of single malt, simply called The Old Malt Cask -just because- but I don't think I've ever liked it neat (or on ice).
But steep a handfull of shavings of Oak in a decent vodka for a few years and I'm all over it! -It's almost as good as a well made Walnut infusion ;p

Rum, is a journey of discovery I am currently on with a good deal of help from my local purveyor of coffe, tea, arts & crafts and rum. This has made me purchase a Rum Nation Demerara, Solera No 14 (from British Guiana), which is quite nice, and a bottle of (19-year old) Presidente, which is very nice (a lot smoother than the Demerara).

My vodkas are: Stoli(chnaya) for 'everyday use', Krakus 96% (yep, that's 192 proof) for my infusions and a bottle of the English six times destilled Mayfair (which I haven't tasted yet, and only bought because I liked the three times destilled American Bakon-vodka (brilliant vodka, brilliantly infused with the great taste of bacon) and the bottles had almost the same shape).

Wine is not a thing I collect or have lying around, much, as it's relatively easy to find a nice wine for whatever purpose I might have for it. I've even begun drinking white wines in the last couple of years (although I'd rather have a luke-warm beer than a glass of chilled white wine -if given a choice).

Gin, however, is a matter for a whole new thread...

Rum is nice to discover, I would advice the 12, 15 and 21 year old Eldorado, the 15 year old hits the sweet spot there when it comes to price/taste, the 21 year old is epic but expensive.
The 12 year old is already a great drink, you can also find a great rum in the 7 year old Angelo rum, it issmooth and complex and great to drink without breaking the bank, there is also a 12 year old, haven't been able to get my hands on that one yet, also there's the Dictador which is a fine 12 year old rum.
One of my favorites is a Dutch rum, Zuidam's Flying Dutchman, its a tad less sweet than other rums but it has character.
Yes.. the pirate knows his rum... :mallory:

I haven't gotten into Whiskey and things like that.

I like wine, though I don't think I had any since we were still in New England. In my single days, I liked merlot. But for a long while now, I'm into Cabernet.

As for beer, I love them. I tend to try drink local. I admit I drank either bud lite, coors or sam adams. Sam adams is technically "local" but most of their beer are brewed in Ohio or Pennsylvania.

I tried a few Texas beer. None appeals to me so far. But I liked Mosiac IPA, which is a bit pricey for me these days. I'll buy those once I have a real job here.

Bushmills Black Bush is a local one, better than the single malt. Doesn't cost too much either compared to some. Soco is alright and I know JD is a Sour Mash but close enough.

If I'm mixing it with Coke, either Jack or Jim is a good way to go. No use diluting the good stuff in a mixed drink. I've also enjoyed root beer as a substitute for Coke more since it has the creamy vanilla flavor that pairs well with the bourbon. If I'm taking a shot or sipping it on the rocks, W L Weller is the way to go for bourbon, and Monkey Shoulder is one of the better scotch whisky's I've tried. Having a wife who works at BevMo! has helped me expand my library of favorites. :)

I enjoy the single malt Islays. Lagavulin is top dog. Coal Ila and Laphroaig are a nice change of pace. Bowmore will do in a pinch.

If I'm someplace where these aren't options, I'll go Jameson or the highest-end Jim Beam available.
