Whiplash (a completely naive question)

Flying Spaghetti Monster

Vice Admiral
Admiral
This film, Whiplash, received a lot of awards or nominations. I was actually elated when JK got the award for best supporting actor as he seems like a talented, and stand-up guy.

I still haven't seen the film, but I really don't know, based on trailers, clips, and reviews, why I'd ever want to, except of course for all the little awards plastered over the beginning of the trailer (like Birdman which wasn't all that great). But the main thing here is that JK's character seems like an asshole, to the Nth degree.. so much so that it's a caricature of an asshole. I feel like I know the message of this film already, and watching and hour and half of this over-exaggerated jerk doesn't seem like a productive way to spend my time.. nor does it seem like entertainment.

Is it just me?

It's a very good film. The soundtrack was great and I don't even like jazz that much. The script and plot are actually no great shakes, IMHO but they're enhanced by the direction, performances, music and editing.

I don't think it'll be a waste of your time. Enjoy.

I really appreciate the feedback. Yeah I do like the music.. I even have Peart's Burning for Buddy tribute album.. so I'm sure now it will be a good film

Same with me - I don't particularly like jazz, but I thought this movie was great. The final part of the movie was as tense as any action scene I've seen recently.

That would be the ultimate superhero team up. Whiplash has Reed Richards, Supergirl and J. Jonah Jameson, Birdman has Batman, Bruce Banner and Gwen Stacey.

What really got me about Whiplash was the ending, which was one of the most pulse pounding terrific endings I've seen to a film in a long long time.

I think the movie somewhat botches its themes in the end, but it's still an amazing film. I'd recommend it to anyone.
