Whichever movie, do you feel all the Trek soundtracks were brilliant?

Re: Whichever movie, do you feel all the Trek soundtracks were brillia

The trouble with Horner's scores is that he's just riffing on the same music he did over and over again in that period. It's not just the orchestration, sometimes he's reusing the same music from film to film, from Humanoids From the Deep to Cocoon to Aliens. His scores aren't brilliant because they're largely recycled.

So? The fact that certain themes have been used several times in no way reduces their quality.

The point is how can someone say TWOK is one of the greatest scores ever without lumping it in along with another 12 movies where he used much of the same music?

I always laugh when I see "best ever" lists that only include sci-fi/fantasy genre films. There's tons of great film scores out there which are as good as or better than the ones typically listed. Lawrence of Arabia or The Magnificent Seven, anyone? :)

Maybe, but the soundtracks I listed, the main themes accompany some all-time classic moments in the whole of cinema - mainly due to the nature of those movies, and there's no escaping that fact - think the asteroid chase in Empire Strikes back, TMP flyby, they are scenes of awe, and they will also be associated with the music as much as the scene...

^^^A la Lawrence of Arabia.

Obviously everyone's seen different stuff, but I have no idea what that music even sounds like, and I'm 40 in a couple of months

Then lump them all together. My point is how can you say that the music is not great simply because it has been used often?

i love Ilia's Theme from TMP. I've already put the starscape overture sequence on an endless loop and used it as background music to read, work and fall asleep by.

That's a great score, and certainly great soundtrack moments are hardly confined to genre flicks. The Magnificent Seven is another perfect example. One could also cite the scores to North by Northwest and Psycho, just to name a few.

Some of my other staples: The Seventh Voyage of Sinbad, The Private Life of Sherlock Holmes, and Blink, this largely-forgotten serial-killer thriller with a really cool soundtrack.

Heck, I love the theme to Exodus (1960) and I've never even seen the movie! :)

Do yourself a favor and see it . . . on the biggest screen you can find!

Lawrence of Arabia is an amazing movie . . . and the music is fantastic.

I absolutely agree! Another super-wide screen classic with amazing music is The Ten Commandments. I also have a fondness for some movies with march-like themes -- The Great Escape and Bridge Over the River Kwai.

Started off today listening to the Star Trek (2009) soundtrack before eventually shifting over The Wrath of Khan after lunch . . ..
