Which was the first decent episode of TNG?

Here's my breakdown for season one:

Great episodes: None.
Decent episodes: The Big Goodbye, 11001001, Heart of Glory, Conspiracy.
Watchable on a rainy day: Where No One Has Gone Before, Datalore
In a word, 'Awful': Everything else.

The first great episode of TNG was The Measure Of A Man.

I was amused by how 80's Encounter was. I just watched it for the first time. Back in the day during original airings, mom refused season one to be on in her house. haha. So I have a whole season I haven't watched yet to go through.

I didn't dislike the pilot but for me I'd say Measure of a Man.

Gene Roddenberry's stamp is all over the 1st Season and it served as a solid foundation for ALL of STAR TREK for the next ... what? 20 years, or so! And the experimentation on display still seems fresh. GR really didn't want to revisit TOS very much and though some of it is present in TNG, much of the time ... it's absent. And that's a good thing. So, go on ... dig into every episode. You can watch with confidence. Go on ... go! Enjoy ...

The Neutral Zone. We get a hint of what's to come with the Borg, we see Marc Alaimo for the first time, and we see three 20th century people introduced to the 24th century. What's not to like?

introduction of Q was good as was Data cant say whhat the first good episode was , personally for me it was when tasha died but just because it was a bad character . after that though instarted really wnjoyed the series but for a long time before that they were kind of recylcing TOS plots : stillcant say first good episode but the best scene of the whole aeries is when Q turns Bev into a dog

Where No One Has Gone Before was very decent. I still think the two best episodes of the first season are 11001001 and Conspiracy.

I'd agree that WNOHGB is probably the first decent episode. I suppose I could include the pilot, but it's very heavy handed, as are many first season episodes. I think though that the first episode that could be said was truly great is "A Measure Of A Man". However, we're talking about the difference between decent and substantial.

but it's very heavy handed, as are many first season episodes.

pulled this part out becausebeen thinking about this thread all evening , also while reading some other threads onTMP : i agree the first season especially was realy flat . i was just trying to think when i started liking it and i think its not until those episodes when the characters have some depth. to be honest in the beginning it was like oh well its startrek startrek has fans so we will be ok just out some people on a ship lets give them some gimmicks and then they were like gimmick gimmick gimmick . i was thinking about this because i didnt really like riker until we started to find out how he hated his father was kindnof runni g away from him his whole career and idolized picard who was actually despite popular belief very anti establishment . Data came across from the beginning as a full flush character, but they wanted us to like wesley and no body likes the class nerd . worf thing was he was a klingon , a blind guybwith a visor the visor i never really got it seemed like they always should have been cybernetic implants . just saying i agree the first season or two was too forced : i am not done with enterprise yet but when i start rewatching them i can tell you what episode it was when is tarted liki gnit i know it couldnt havebeen before season 2 -season3 i knowni didnt really start to watch it until both tasha and beverly were gone

My mind jumped immediately to Q-Who but I think there are a lot of good individual moments in Season 1 and 2. I think 11001001, Coming of Age, Heart of Glory and The Arsenal of Freedom are pretty good but flawed episodes but show some of the potential later seasons would deliver on. Even though from Season 3 onwards everything gets better overall with the show, I feel like the early seasons took a few more risks with character's emotions, like "The Naked Now" and random weird stuff like the slime monster Armus or the vicious animal things. Picard's speech to Q about what a piece of work is man is also really great as well.

For the last couple years, whenever I feel like watching a random TNG, I always end up streaming one from the first two seasons. (Probably because the urge to TNG usually crops up when I wake up in the middle of the night and can't get back to sleep, and the weirdness of those early years is the best fit for 3 AM viewing)

I'm interested to see how many people mention "Where No One Has Gone Before" as the first great ep. That one I always had a very neutral response too, it never really struck me one way or the other. I probably haven't rewatched it in the last 20 years -- that's definitely what I'm watching my next insomniac night.

For me, the first great one is either "The Big Goodbye" or "11001001"

Agree.

Also "Arsenal of Freedom" comes to mind. LaForge was in charge...something we don't see in later seasons. (It became more about him not getting dates and being captured or harmed by the villains in later seasons).

yes i agree. "The Arsenal of Freedom" is one of my personal favourites. "The Battle" was great too. How LaForge handled command of the enterprise during "Arsenal of Freedom" was probably the reason why he later on got promoted to Chief Engineer. Great episode.

I'll throw another vote at "Encounter at Farpoint." Never had a problem with it, and still don't.

First episodes that made me think the show had great potential were "WNOHGB" and "11001001." First show that totally blew me away was "Conspiracy."

Never saw the hype in "Measure of a Man" Always seemed like a typical obligatory sci-fi story to me.

I wasn't that impressed by the first three episodes. For some reason I hade expected more that there were.
However, I never found those episodes bad or unlikeable. It was just that I wanted somethong more.
But I liked "The Last Outpost". It was a step up as I saw it. Then came "The Battle" which was really good and from there on I started to like the show more and more.

As everyone knows, the first few ventures of TNG weren't the best. So which episdoe did yo ufeel was the first decent one? I thought The Battle was okay, (which amdei t even worse for me that most of the later episodes weren't that good) but my friend thinks that TNG's first decent episode was Measure of Man. So what do you guys think was the first decent episode of TNG?
"Where No One Has Gone Before". Great episode.
