Which story was this?

Okay, so I can't remember the name of it. The TARDIS materializes in a remote base where there's a team doing work. The team consists of a diverse cast, with lots of tension between a few of them, some of it unrequited love. There's a young innocent, a rich jerk and a go-getter lady, among others.

Turns out that the group's work has created this dire threat that keeps on killing members one at a time, in fairly gruesome fashion. At first the Doctor doesn't understand what's going on, then he uncovers the secret thread between the crew and the threat. There's a lot of running down hallways and closing of doors. Team members have temper tantrums and blame the Doctor when their favorite comrade gets killed.

By the end the threat is seriously escalated but the plan works at the last minute. Does this ring any bells?

that is like asking, 'you ever see the episode of Gilligan's Island where they almost get off the island but Gilligan screws up at the last second?'

If it helps to narrow it down, I remember a character who's behavior and identity was kind of looked down on by the rest of the team, but who impressed the Doctor with their cleverness and moral character. Also, the threat was usually slow enough to run away from.

Is this the one where the Enterprise/ENT-D/Defiant/Voyager/NX is facing certain doom due to a warp core malfunction and the crew has only a finite amount of time to fix a hopeless problem?

Idk, it could be any story!

TV/audio/novel/comic/bubblegum wrapper/fevered dream/epic poem/Jamaican advert for computers?

Black & white/colour/widescreed/HD/3D/direct brain implant?

Earth/alien planet/space/moon/spaceship?

Anything to narrow it down?

Is this the episode where Michael pressed the turbo boost button and KITT jumped over something?

Could you at least narrow it down to which doctor or companion was in the episode?

That sounds plausible. Did a character moralize to the Doctor about his cavalier attitude towards their deaths? Did the rich character take horrible risks with the lives of the other team members?

Yes, actually. He was known for an accessory and hairstyle that was kind of distracting from the narrative.

I like this game. Too bad I don't have the right answer.

It reminds me of the Impossible Planet the most, though.

If they did they used the gravel quarry for exterior establishing shots. The sets mainly consisted of cramped hallways.

The first two stories that came to my mind from that description were Tomb of the Cybermen and The Seeds of Death.

I don't have much familiarity with classic Who, so my first instinct was "Silence in the Library."

Group of researchers. Dumb girl that everyone looks down on. Lots of running. Characters being picked off one by one.

I think it's mainly the influence of the Troughton era, in particular season 5 (and some of season 6 too). Although a good chunk of it is lost, it was a highly influential era and remains so to this day-Sylvestor McCoy and Matt Smith largely built their portrayals on Troughton (and I suppose Tom did a bit too).

There didn't seem to be that many similar stories beforehand, except for maybe the Tenth Planet (Which of course, is Troughton's first appearence!)

Anybody else notice the underwater lake basically is the Dalek's eyestalk set from Into The Dalek?
