Which Star Trek captain would make the best US president?

Actually, I'm going to tweak my answer slightly.

Janeway for POTUS
Archer for VP
Picard for SCOTUS Chief Justice
Sisko for Speaker of the House
Kirk for Senate Majority Leader

Switch Janeway and Picard and it's a fine list for me.

What about Edward Jellico??
Yes, that's all America needs, a hawkish war warmongering arse of a man.

The primary reason I put them in their respective spots on that list is that the SCOTUS Chief Justice position is a lifetime appointment, and I think of the five "hero" captains, Picard is the only one I'd feel comfortable with having a lifetime appointment to ANYTHING. Janeway could serve two terms, then perhaps Kirk, as POTUS, but The Picard would always remain.

President Jean-Luc Picard
Vice President William T. Riker
Speaker of the House Kathryn Janeway
Senate Majority Leader James T. Kirk
Supreme Court Chief Justice Jonathan Archer
Secretary of State Spock
Secretary of the Treasury Data
Secretary of Defense Worf
Attorney General Odo
Secretary of the Interior Chakotay
Secretary of Agriculture Neelix
Secretary of Commerce Tuvok
Secretary of Labor Hikaru Sulu
Secretary of Health and Human Services The Doctor
Secretary of Housing and Urban Development Benjamin Sisko
Secretary of Transportation Harry Kim
Secretary of Energy Geordi LaForge
Secretary of Education Leonard McCoy
Secretary of Veteran Affairs Ro Laren
Secretary of Homeland Security Malcom Reed
Trade Representative T'Pol
Director of National Intelligence Julian Bashir
Ambassador to the UN Curzon Dax
Office of Management and Budget Kira Nerys
Director of Central Intelligence Charles Tucker III
Administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency Dr. Phlox
Administrator of the Small Business Administration Miles O'Brien

Great thread, shame there's no poll.

Sisko. He had the best idea of how to run a community. There's no way Picard would have bribed the barkeeper to stay, but Sisko realised how important that was for his community to thrive.

So you're saying he was a great community organiser?

What do we really know about him though? Was he even born on Earth?

Sisko. He had the best idea of how to run a community. There's no way Picard would have bribed the barkeeper to stay, but Sisko realised how important that was for his community to thrive. He understood how to translate ideology into practicality, how to make rational decisions and compromise, and although the show was inconsistent on this aspect later in its run (Dax/Ross/The Prophets told me not to, but I'm doing it anyway became a trope in the last couple of seasons), he is initially able to take advice and see its value.
Picard would be a close second choice, but he would need to be less rigid in his style. Janeway and Kirk aren't strategic leaders, they lack big picture thinking, and Archer is an empty uniform and a racist. So no.

Holy crap!
In the pale moonlight?

You think a guy who tricks a foreign government into joining a war by lying and planting false evidence should be running a country?

I mean... isn't Sisko basically Dubya? :p

Janeway would probably make a better president. Unless of course she starts a nuclear war whenever she hasn't had any coffee.

I find it interesting that so many people seemed to think it's fitting to comment on Janeway's ruthlessness. She wasn't the only one capable of such ruthlessness. Both Kirk and Sisko are practically her equals in that regard. And even Picard and Archer could be ruthless. Is the fact that Janeway is a woman that so many feel the need to comment on how ruthless she can be?

I think you're reading too much into an attempt at humor, at least with the quote you chose to use.

But then, the show itself commented several times on Janeway's coffee fixation.

How about Dirgo from TNG "Final Mission."
He was a captain in Star Trek.

Kor

Sisko. He would be awesome. Captain Picard would be an excellent VP. Captain Kirk would be a good Secretary of State. Captain Archer, Secretary of Defense. Still deciding on a post for Captain Janeway.

I also vote Sisko. Runner up would be Picard, then Janeway. Kirk wouldn't do... he's not a desk jockey. Last place would be Archer.

Picard is the obvious answer, IMO. Janeway would be second, followed by Archer. I don't think the Presidency would suit Kirk or Sisko at all.

Homeward is Picard's indictment. He wants to let an entire planet and civilisation get wiped out because Prime Directive, bitches. They are only saved because Worf comes up with a way to have their cake and eat it (move them without breaking the rule). If they hadn't had that option, he'd have sat and watched them die, made a log entry, and warped away. That's what I meant by he'd have to be less rigid as a POTUS, be guided more by ethics and morality than rigidly following rules. Insurrection Picard rather than TV Picard, singing optional. In the Pale Moonlight on the other hand is a hell of a decision, and one that I can't say I'm OK with, but it shortened the war and ultimately probably prevented a Dominion takeover of the Alpha Quadrant. I liken it to the decision to nuke Japan - it would be debated for years to come, but it was a presidential type decision in which Sisko decided to win despite the cost.
