I actually find this a very interesting question. I have always slept on the right side of the bed (as you look at it)
Now that you say it... when you guys says "left side" or "right side" of the bed, you mean looking at the bed from the bottom of it, or lying on the bed? I meant lying on it, but it seems not everybody consider that.

Does the right side mean that your right arm would be on the edge? If so than yes. I lay there because my little TV sits at the edge of the bed and I fall asleep with headphones from it in.

By that, I mean, for much of my life I was a stomach sleeper...

Hmm, I sense another poll at some stage on this. :D

I've always been a stomach sleeper too. I really cannot sleep on my back at all. Even sleeping on my side is too difficult for me to want to try it often. How did you retrain yourself?

Yeah, like Kestra, my switch was of necessity. I developed a herniated disc in my neck, and sleeping on my stomach only aggravated it, and my doc said it always would. And, also like her, I'm afraid I can't recall exactly how long it took. But, I do recall thinking at one point after I'd made the transition that it happened more easily than I would have imagined, because my entire life whenever I'd tried to sleep in any other position I couldn't. My doc (actually, my chiropractor) suggested the whole body pillow, as well. But, I found all I really needed was an extra pillow under my head and another to put between my knees (no wisecracks Shameless.) :p

And I sense yet another poll. That's actually exactly why I clarified in mine. I don't know how people determine which side is which: I've always done it based on looking at the bed from the foot but can, of course, see equal merit in the other approach.

I find some of my best, most relaxed sleep occurs when I'm on my back.

Does anyone know why someone would raise their arms (not in the air, on the bad), bending them so that their hands were at their ears, almost behind their heads? Is that a circulation thing? Or just a weird thing? I gotta know whether to worry or tease.

Left side in the bed/right side if you're facing it. When I slept alone in the past it was usually the middle of the bed (single/twin, basically anything not queen sized) or to whatever side was not against the wall or was nearer to my night stand which depending on the set up was the opposite side of the bed to now.

Yeah, now I'm more confused than ever!

On the left, or sprawled across on a diagonal. Often w/ a subservient quadruped on top of me.

To address your original question: when I was married, I slept on the right. No idea how we chose sides.

It's difficult to say how long it took because it's sort of a gradual process, and I'll still sleep on my stomach on the rare occasion. I think it probably took a couple weeks to get used to it and a month to really prefer it. As far as sleeplessness, it wasn't too bad. At first I'd have a little more difficulty falling asleep and be tempted to just turn over, but I got past that fairly quickly. I'd also wake up every now and then but it honestly wasn't that bad.

I'd been sleeping on my stomach for a long time so when my chiropractor told me to switch, I really didn't think I'd be able to do it. I'd suggest at least trying it for a few weeks to see how it goes.

Thanks. When I muster up enough courage, I'll give it a go! ;)

Huh, i never took into consideration what side was what based on where you were standing, or lying. I assumed it was a given that the side you sleep on is based on the side while lying down, not standing at the foot of the bed.

I guess that invalidates the poll, then.

I sleep on the dark side.

OH tends to sleep on the couch, 3-dog-night style*, snoring loudly, to prep himself for going to bed. Then the whole posse come up with him so both humans end up sleeping like swastikas.

*often 1 cat too**

**it occurs to me that nobody would believe this, so I'll have to take a pic.

^ Do you need to pee often during the night?

^:rommie: While I am getting on in years I still haven't reached that hurdle, the explanation is simpler; guys tend to want to protect their sleep-mates against any and all surprise attacks during the night - we accomplish this by lying on the side closest to the cave opening. It's probably hardwired into us...

Honestly, I've never thought about it. We never had any breaking in, nor anyone I know directly: we live in a pretty safe place.

Beside, my fiancée is probably more capable to defend herself than me: we are about the same size and weight, and while I may have some advantage in bone density or upper body strength, she is recognisably more skilled, and definitively meaner than me. ;)

And here I thought you were trying to make it easier to escape your one-night stands.

^[iguana_terrificante]^Being meaner than you might be good for scaring your neighbours saber-toothed tiger, but a mammoth is only scared off by a male pounding his chest...

Studies about where married people place themselves in bed in relation to the door of the bedroom point to the fact that the 'protector' lies closest to the door. Sure it's a weird factoid, and my cave-man explanation is probably not the reason - modern-day machismo seems more like the culprit.

Fair explanation. In my case, I always lie on the left side of the bed (looking from the head of the bed), so our relation to the door is always different: at her place, it means I am closer to the door; at my place, the door is actually on the wall directly at the foot of the bed, so we are both equally close; and in hotels and rented rooms, it obviously depends on the positioning of the bed in the room.

For some reason I have always slept on the right side of the bed.

When I was younger, this was the side closest to the door.

Now that I'm older, it's the side closest to my nightstand, and my CPAP machine.

One of this machine's disadvantages, I am discovering, is that it makes it virtually impossible to sleep on your stomach. So instead of rolling over in my sleep, I roll from one side, to my back, to the other side--then back again.
