TMP. It was all about boldly going. TWOK is a good second. Unfortunately that was the beginning of "rogue" Kirk (not intentionally though). He never seemed that much of a rules-breaker in TOS - that seemed to me to be a construct of the later movies.

He 'broke' rules, after a fashion in TOS, but in the movies he was 'maneuvered' into REALLY breaking them.

The reputation of Kirk as a rules-breaker is only supported by a few incidents in TOS that I can think of, and they were cases the usually involved a stuffy superior officer or bureaucrat, and the end results justified Kirk's better judgment. Specifically, Matt Deckard in The Doomsday Machine, the guy from The Galileo Seven (can't remember his position), etc. The only other example I can think of was when Kirk took the Enterprise to Vulcan in Amok Time to save Spock. He did make the decision on his own to engage the Bird of Prey in Balance of Terror because there was no time to wait for authorization from Starfleet; the reply from Starfleet that it was OK came at the end of the episode anyway, after he'd already done it.

I agree with your analysis. And that sort of explains why I like TMP as being closest to TOS. Plus it just feels more like what Roddenberry was looking to show as an example of what the future of humanity would be like. The other movies, while fun and wonderful in their own rights (with exceptions that I won't get into), are great sci-fi action films, but don't feel as much as a continuation of the series.They feel very separate from it to me. TMP feels like it could have been an extra-long "lost" episode. Of course, it WAS written originally as the pilot to Phase 2... so there IS that.

It's one of my favourite eps, for reasons I can't even begin to explain at this late hour. Suffice it to say I love my Constitution. And I stand for the flag, just like Kirk did. And that flag leads to the creation of Starfleet. Our best possible destiny.

For me, it's no contest- The Voyage Home. Much of Final Frontier also qualifies, the general tone of Wrath of Khan is good, Kirk is excellent in Search For Spock, and many lines in Undiscovered Country are very *wink wink*, but it's The Voyage Home that really feels the most to me like a real extension of the serious & funny that defined the greatest show on Earth.

TFF for sure. It felt the most "TOSey". TMP felt visually close, but TFF felt emotionally similar.

A *tiny* bit of editing & some clean-up FX would easily make it my favourite TOS-y Trek movie.
As is, Voyage Home get's that spot.

I agree about "The Voyage Home". It has that nice balance between action set pieces and cute character moments. Of course the action sequences were on a grander scale than any on the series and I think they went a little overboard with them towards the end (pun intended), but I also still think it captured the spirit of the series wonderfully...big adventure, and warm little character interactions all wrapped into one package.

Interesting. TWoK was a departure in both look & feel from TOS and TMP. And TSFS was forced to follow it (to a lesser degree I believe). I would have inverted these last two myself, but I can see why you had them in this order. TSFS was merely a "connection" piece to subsequent movies, much like The Empire Strikes Back- not a complete story in and of itself.

Maybe I'm just the oddball, but I always thought that TMP captured this feel the best.

In ways, yes. It's just that lack of much humour & colour sort of made it epic SF more than the adventurous pulp we came to love IMO.

True... but, bugger it, call me an oddball too: I love TMP and I first saw this when all else existed was the series now referred to as TOS.

TMP at #2? Interesting choice. Plot-wise, it would be right at home in TOS, but character-wise not at all. Everybody’s so grim. Don’t get me wrong, I love TMP now that Wise has finally finished it, but it does not mimic the tone of the series.

TMP felt the most trek-like experience for me, but as far as the characters are concerned, I'd go for TFF. The Kirk-Spock-McCoy dynamic really shined in that film.
