Which Network For Your Show?

One option I might consider is direct-to-DVD/BR. I've been advocating for awhile that more TV show producers should just go this route rather than relying on finicky networks.
But could you make enough $$ at it to fund decent production?

Caprica sort of did that with its first episode being released nearly a year before broadcast
That's a marketing ploy. They're depending on broadcast (well actually cable - not broadcast) to pay for the show.

and we've already seen a few TV series get their North American distribution exclusively on DVD, such as the second season of The Sarah Jane Adventures.
Production is already paid for, so any revenues are gravy. The cost of goods for the DVD and packaging is small, so why not kick it out there? You can't help but make money. Production is still being funded by a broadcast financial model.

My show would either be a (better) adaptation of Jim Butcher's The Dresden Files or an adaptation of Brian K. Vaughan's Y: The Last Man, and I'd rather do those on a premium cable network like HBO or Showtime. FX would be fine, too, but more for The Dresden Files, which doesn't feature nearly as much nudity or sex as does Y: The Last Man.

I'd only go for one of the broadcast networks if I wanted to do a cop, lawyer, or medical drama.

After reading the first Dresden Files novel, I think the lead actor should be grubbier and more dangerous - more of a John Malkovitch type.
