Star Wars has the most appeal to me, but I'm sure the Godfather trilogy is the best of all time even discounting the third movie.

The point I'm makin' is a trilogy is three movies. More or less than that, and ya don't have a trilogy.

Do we even need to stipulate at this point that the SW PT can and should be roundly ignored? ;)

There is no question, for me. Back to the Future hands down.

I recently had the chance to see them on the movie screen for the very first time as I was too young to see them when they were initially in theaters.

That was quite an experience.

Dear Joe Washington,

We apologize for nerdering your thread, but I want you to know it's actually a beautiful thing. It is the natural order of things. Find peace and beauty in it, and accept that this is the way things were meant to be. From the remains will grow a new seed of life, one that will grow strong in the sunlight, and manifest itself in the cool breezes of the day. It is joyful, singing with the birds of the air. It is nature. It is harmony. It is as all things should be.™

Sincerely,
J. and all the other anal retentive nerds who dragged your thread into a dark and damp back alley and had our way with it.

Didn't notice that we could pick two. I blame your topic title which only asked for one. :rommie:

I picked SW OT and would've picked LOTR as my second choice. I just find the SW galaxy setting, with its mix of Sci-Fi and Fantasy to be way more interesting than Middle Earth. I'll always pick space ships over dragons.

Sad that Pirates and Matrix have zero votes. Pirates 3 could have been much better if the story wasn't so darn long. The Matrix sequels... well they should have never been made in the first place.

This is an unanswerable question, as written, due to it not distinguishing between prequel and original Star Wars trilogies, and not distinguishing between books and movie adaptations. ETA: Ah, I see. I was wrong, it does ask for movie trilogies (in the poll but not in the thread title). My other comments still stand.

As books, The Lord of the Rings isn't exactly a trilogy, so much as three bound volumes of two books each (plus appendices). It is far and away my favorite thing that is commonly called a trilogy. Jackson's movies, not so much.

For movie trilogies, the Star Wars original trilogy (Episodes IV, V, and VI) is my favorite thing commonly called a trilogy. Although, again, if you want to get technical, there are altogether six Star Wars films (together, not a trilogy).

Funny how six is the magic number in both cases, for books and movies, rather than three.

Interesting that BTTF is getting the third most votes.

I only thought the first movie was great. I thought the sequels were merely okay. The second movie is really uneven and the third movie copies the first so much.

1. Lord of the Rings
2. Indiana Jones
3. Back to the Future
4. Bourne
5. Pirates of the Caribbean
6. Toy Story

Even though the Toy Story trilogy is ranked #6 doesn't take away the fact how much I love each film. I love every single one of those films, just more than some.

I agree that the Star Wars films form a trilogy, or two trilogies, rather than just a hexaology. I also agree that the first three films of Pirates and Indiana Jones also form trilogies regardless of the content of the latter entries in each series. However, that said, I think Star Trek 2, 3, and 4 should count as well.

Thank you for J for the beautiful apology.

I suppose if one of the qualifications of "trilogy" for this thread is that there must be some semblance of an ongoing storyline, then the Indiana Jones films are just too disconnected to qualify. Same with Mission Impossible, another favorite series of mine. I'd also be tempted to point out the 3 live action Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movies from the early 1990s, but the 3rd one is pretty much a stand-alone story that has very little to do with the Shredder-centric plotlines of the 1st 2.

Oh! Blade! You forgot the Blade trilogy! (Granted, I would have a hard time voting for it. Blade Trinity drags down the average too much.)

I do think it's a mistake to not separate the original & prequel trilogies for Star Wars, but it doesn't matter to me too much because I like both a lot.

My single favorite would have to be Back to the Future. Those movies are pretty much the cinematic bedrock on which my soul is written.

"Last night, Darth Vader came down from the planet Vulcan and told me that if I didn't ask Lorraine out to the dance, he'd melt my brain!"

"The justice system moves swiftly in the future, now that they've abolished all lawyers."

"Freeze!"
"Is this a hold up?"
"It's a science experiment!"

2nd place goes to The Lord of the Rings. I can't imagine we'll ever get a more perfect fantasy epic than this.

3rd place goes to both the original & prequel trilogies of Star Wars. The original is a landmark classic, practically inventing the summer blockbuster and the movie franchise as we still know those concepts today. The prequels are a triumph of production design & world building & exotic action.

4th place goes to the very underrated Pirates of the Caribbean trilogy. Though it took them a while to grow on me, I really appreciate the work that they put into the sequels, building up the story, evolving so many of the beloved minor characters over the series. My big disappointment with the 4th entry was that there wasn't enough continuity with the other 3, particularly with the minor characters like Pintel & Ragetti. Plus, Dead Man's Chest has one of the greatest cliffhanger endings ever!

Honorable mention for the Toy Story trilogy. It defies all natural laws of Hollywood & sequels that any of these movies were even 1/10th as good as they ended up being. Toy Story 3 is one of only two movies that has ever made me cry.

P.S. I can't wait to see how Chris Nolan wraps up his Batman trilogy next summer with The Dark Knight Rises.
