I also expect a good story, good SFX and fun. And adherence to canon if & when it does not conflict with any of the foregoing.

Forward that to Mr. Abrams, please. And tell him to start reshoots if he doesn't get it.

I think he'll get it just fine. I ran across an interesting talk he gave at the TED conference. The scene he chose that expresses the "essence" of Jaws is very revealing, and comforting that he understands the movie wasn't really about a big-ass shark at all. Just as Star Trek isn't essentially about transporters, technobabble, future political organizations in space or even a really cool famous spaceship. (If you're the impatient sort, it starts about 11 minutes in.)
