I voted story, though I'm starting to regret it. In a movie that's a prequel, a combination of faith to the original interpretation of the characters and innovation is very important. I'd actually put them on about the same level.

I just want to hear the sliding doors make that swooshing sound. If the movie has that, then I'm good.

A good story also needs good characters to carry it. If I don't give a hoot about the characters, it doesn't matter to me how good the story is.
Bingo. Characters make or break a TV show for me; if I can't get interested in the characters I find myself unable to give a damn what they do. That doesn't apply quite as much to a movie, but it's still a factor for me and since this is a Trek movie it's more relevant than it would otherwise be.

Get the characters right and it's a good start. Placing them in a good story would be even better.

I said story, although I don't really think you can make a good story without having good characters.

I voted 'Story'. I came very close to voting 'characters', but then I thought it through, and decided that for a movie, 2 and a half hours max, especially one where the characters are already essentially established for years already, I'm not all that fussed about intensive character development, if it's sacrificed for a really compelling story.

Ditto. Another important element is a story with a broader appeal than a one simply to try to please the fan base.

Normally I would vote story. However in this particular situation the characters are extremely important because they are well known. It is similar to getting a new James Bond - he better be a good Bond or else the movie will bomb. If the audiences accept the new characters, the story is extremely important too. Even iconic TOS characters fail when they have stupid story lines - just look at the 3rd season of TOS. Though extremely important to have a good story, the characters in this particular movie are under a microscope so they will make or break the movie more than the story because all eyes are on them for the passing of the torch.

one half characters.. the story no matter how good will wreck if the dont get the characters right.
one fourth story and then a nice amount of things that will make you go hmm along with a bit if humor.

I think all of the above choices are very important. Canon, character development, Action........these are the things that make Star Trek Star Trek!

This debate over which is more important, the story or the characters, is reminding me an awful lot of the old, "Which came first? The chicken or the egg?" debate. Personally I haven't voted yet, since I can't make up mind.

The inclusion of the number '47'.

Number 47 my arse.

Bounces me out of every fucking episode. I don't want to see the number 4 or 7 anywhere near this movie and I may very well shout out a swearword in the movie theatre should I hear it or see it.

In fact, I hope Abrams removes every 4 and 7 in post. That goes for the individual numbers too. I realise that means the Enterprise has to have NCC-101 but thats a price I'm willing to pay. It may be too late as this stage, so a subtle pixalation of the number 7 on the hull might appease me.

Heh, I NEVER noticed the "47" inclusions in the show! They always went over my head because I was busy paying attention to the story.
