I came very close to voting 'characters', but then I thought it through, and decided that for a movie, 2 and a half hours max, especially one where the characters are already essentially established for years already, I'm not all that fussed about intensive character development, if it's sacrificed for a really compelling story.

Exactly.
A good story also needs good characters to carry it. If I don't give a hoot about the characters, it doesn't matter to me how good the story is.

As far as just "fun" goes, I hope the movie is more than a piece of bubble gum that's enjoyed for a while then spit out and forgotten. No shallow summer escapism, please. Independence Day was kinda cool the first time I saw it, but when I saw it a second time with my brain on, it's filled with so many stupid WTF moments that I don't care if I ever see it again -- especially the "happy ending" after civilization on Earth was pretty much destroyed.
I know XI is not going to be a deep movie, but I'd like to think I'll enjoy watching XI more than once, and maybe even still appreciate it a few years later.

The reason I voted Characters is that if they're not believable, if the old chemistry isn't there, they are just going to be people walking around pretending to be Captain Kirk & Co. As admirable as I think all the fan film efforts are, none of them have captured that for me. I simply don't believe any of those actors in their roles. I don't want this film to be just a big budget fan film.
