You forget "Time's Arrow" and "All Good Things". In the former the changes were in effect before the time travel occured; in the latter the different time periods did not effect one another.

I agree on "Time's Arrow." That's the only example I can think of where the result of the time travel is seen before it happens. I tend not to think of "All Good Things" as an actual time travel episode, since Q created the entire scenario. The usual rules don't even begin to apply.

I choose to believe that this Star Trek film is not simply a time line alteration tale in the vein of City on the Edge of Forever.

I think this Star Trek film is a combination of an Alternate Reality and a Time Travel story.

Spock Prime causes an rip in space/time/reality and Spock Prime and Nero are sent to another reality and also into that reality's past.

Kinda like if Kirk Prime had went back into the past of the Mirror Universe and made changes instead of just leaving the Mirror Universe because he knew it wasn't his Prime Universe. Also like in TNG's episode called Parallels Worf Prime made no alterations to the other parallel universes, instead he and the crew realized he wasn't meant to be there... was a total foreign object and made every effort to just put him back in his Prime Universe. But what if both Kirk Prime and Worf Prime never realized they were in their Prime Universe and instead thought time had changed? Both could then have went back in time inside these realities and attempted to change them to resemble their universe... BUT that wouldn't make it their universe, it just makes that other universe resemble theirs and it also would have basically turned our heroes into villains. Thankfully our heroes realize they are not in their Prime Universes and as such both Kirk Prime and Worf Prime just leave the different reality and rejoin their Prime Universe.

Basically Spock Prime and Nero ended up both in the past AND in a different reality EVEN BEFORE Nero made any changes.

Why is this a bowl of coolbeans?

Because...

1. For those that really really care aka are having giant cow babies over it, the Trek Prime Universe IS still there.
2. This POV also explains why Prime Spock doesn't just go further back in time inside this film's universe to set things right (which is basically what would need to happen if this was a simple time alteration story like City on the Edge of Forever). Spock WOULD NOT STOP trying to put time back to order if he new he was in his Prime Universe. Because Spock Prime doesn't go further back in time I believe Spock Prime, like Kirk Prime in Mirror, just realized he was in a completely different reality anyway.

Edit: typos/slight expansion and clarification of my thought.

I'm actually really cool with the notion of this being an Alternate Reality. I would have a harder time with it if it were a New Prime Timeline, because that would imply a negation of everything we saw on the big and small screens from 1966-2005!

I like to imagine that the adventures of Jean-Luc Picard, Will Riker, Kira Nerys, etcetera, are continuing just as they would be if Ambassador Spock and Nero had never gone back in time. That way I'm a little more comfortable and more accepting of whatever future story developments take place in future films.

An ever-so-minor distinction, yes it's true, but sometimes the ability to accept and deal with the shock of the new ultimately boils down to a matter of semantics!

It is a alternate reailty. Whether you choose to 'accept' that or not, is up to each person.
Agreed.
[RANT]STOP IT ALREADY!!! I'M ABOUT TO LOSE MY FRAKKING MIND WITH THESE THREADS. IF YOU'VE READ ANY INFORMATION ABOUT THE MOVIE, THIS IS DISCUSSED. [/END RANT]
Ditto.

In the movie's own dialogue it is presented that this is an alternate reality/parallel universe. It's in the script, it's dialogue, it's on-sreen; therefore alternate reality is canon. End of discussion.

This is a bad poll because the alternate reality IS the new prime time line which Nero created when he traveled back in time which is also in the script. It's dialogue. Spock Prime cannot get back to what isn't there any more.

I agree and voted for alternate reality for these very reasons! Its nice to think the shows we all saw are still alive in their universe while this new one starts fresh!

The point is moot. The old time line has been washed away. Most of the fandom focus will be on the new series of movies.
